Reason was while the North was a competitor to UK and other economies, the South supplied those economies with raw material and bought their industrialized goods.
Now things might have changed a bit. I would wager the Northern economy has been on the decline, with many of its industrial base gone/moved while the Southern one has improved to a certain point... at least in places like Florida and North Carolina and so on. Makes you wonder...
