Serious, we Europeans would have been way happier with the South... Britain and the King of Prussia sent money to support them, French too... unfortunately, some ships were lost and others kept money for themselves ^^

Reason was while the North was a competitor to UK and other economies, the South supplied those economies with raw material and bought their industrialized goods.

Now things might have changed a bit. I would wager the Northern economy has been on the decline, with many of its industrial base gone/moved while the Southern one has improved to a certain point... at least in places like Florida and North Carolina and so on. Makes you wonder...

You are totally right, this was the exact reason. Well, today the South is more successful because he has his flair and the climate for tourism PLUS industries, so he has two legs and not just one.

Goodness....they allowe the word "confederate" in Arkansas? It's almost outlawed in Georgia (so a certain group doesn't get uppity).

My wife and I honeymooned in Charleston, SC, and we did some sightseeing while there. Never saw so many Rebel monuments in my life when we were there! In the old part of town, there was some reminder of the Confederacy on every street practically.

One of many reasons I opted not to go to Uni in the South. Well, I might consider ONE institution, if I can get a reputation that gives me some scholarship opportunities.

Its a monument to the soldiers that died in the war. Most places have monuments to soldiers they lost. Its not supposed to be offensive.
