At the bottom of the rack of brooding chickens lays one enormous bird, more of a gurgling mass of fat and feathers than a chicken. Ever since she realised that she had fallen gravid with an egg, she began to overeat and stuff herself to near bursting daily. She thought that becoming as fat as possible would make her a better mother, allowing her to warm her chick with her enormous fatty body, as well as keep it safe under all that flab. Eventually, she fell through her old shelf and was moved underneath the other chickens. From there she gained more and more, until one morning she could no longer hoist herself up to gather more food. She was ready for an egg, even though it took her breaking through a shelf, being demoted to a bottom-shelf spot and becoming immobile. She now waits for an egg under all her fat feathery blubber.
