“So how does Santa deliver all those gifts in one night?” Sophie asked.
“Umm…” Krista looked back and forth.
“Well he doesn’t actually deliver all of them in one night,” Alex interjected.
“He doesn’t?”
“No - you see, not everyone celebrates Christmas.”
“Like you and Matt?”
“Alex smiled. “That’s right, sweetie. Matt and I are Jewish, so we celebrate Hanukkah instead. That’s why we have those candles in the window.” She pointed to the menorah.
“But you got presents last year, didn’t you?” Sophie whined.
“We do - we just spread it out a bit longer. I think years ago we made a deal with Santa so he didn’t have to carry everything at once. Made the reindeer tired.”
“And even people who celebrate Christmas don’t all give presents then,” said Dan as he reentered the room.
“That’s right. Opa’s family would have opened their gifts on St Nicholas Day - that’s tomorrow,” Krista agreed.
“And some countries like Russia don’t have Christmas until January,” Alex added. “But they do gifts on New Year’s Day instead."
“Ohhhh!” Sophie sat in thought for a moment. “That’s still a lot of presents though.”
“Wellll…” Dan trailed off, “There’s a big secret about how Santa does it...but I don’t know if I can tell you.” He looked at Krista and Alex, who shook their heads dramatically.
“Pleaaaaaase?” Sophie begged. “I won’t tell!”
“Oh, okay.” He looked back and forth, then leaned close and whispered just loud enough for Alex and Krista to hear. “You know that TV show we watch, Doctor Who?”
“Yeah!”
“You know how they can travel through time and space in their blue box?”
“Uh-huh!”
“And how it’s way bigger on the inside, just like Santa’s bag?”
“You mean Santa’s a...um…”
“A Time Lord,” Dan finished. “It’s all a big secret, so you can’t tell anyone.”
“Okay!”
“Now let’s go get you changed. Auntie Jenna will be here soon to take our picture for our cards!”
“So Santa’s a Time Lord now?” Alex remarked skeptically as Krista and Sophie left the room.
“Hey, sleigh’s bigger on the inside, lives forever, weird fashion sense, travels the world at lightning speed - tell me I’m wrong!”
All makes sense now, doesn't it?
