Mild spoilers for Book 4 in the Legend of Ahya series: Broken Empires. Read at your own risk! :)

Despite how much she loved Sebastian for the temporary joy he brought to her daily life, Kanya couldn't escape the singular fact that clouded their entire relationship. He was going to die and she was going to continue to live on. There was no denying that she had lived for centuries and would continue to live for centuries more while Sebastian would grow old and die. She couldn't get too close to him emotionally or it would tear her apart when the inevitable happened. A certain distance was needed between them and Sebastian could sense it.
What made it worse was that she knew what he wanted. He had lost a family and he was seeking a new one. He was seeking to make a new one with her. The problem was that she could not reproduce. Her body was physically incapable of producing new life. It was her curse of being a Drakkonid. Sebastian would talk of the beautiful cubs they could have and perhaps she was like a bird and could get eggs created inside he could inseminate or perhaps she just hadn't found the right compatible partner to impregnate her. Sadly, she knew all of these were impossible. The only thing she could create was life from plants - growing them from seed at a magical rate. It was the only good thing her body could do. She hadn't the willpower to deny Sebastian this false hope, so she continued to keep his bed warm at night.

The hardest part about living for so long, you will eventually find a partner that you love so much but know that the happiness they want you cannot share but could never break their heart telling them the truth...hope Sebastian considers adoption or maybe her plant magic could work some extra special magic for them?
It's a lovely existential problem that I am going to explore in the final books of my series. It's a unique issue that none of my other girls have. Kanya starts out all goofy, perky and outgoing - very nonchalant in her introduction in the series. However, as we get to know her more, we understand why she forced herself to be this way. I'm eager to peel back the layers of this character soon as I write book 5.
