Meet Razz, one of the most famously known and dangerous criminals in the continent. A bandit and a thief. His name is among the list of most wanted around many kingdoms. His unusual stealing methods, his ability to seemingly escape from any kind of prison or get inside any castle vault, and his combat skills gathered quite the cult following among aspiring thieves. Despite all his fame, no one knows anything about his past.
Coming from a withering line of wizards, Razz or rather Raziel grew up surrounded by old textbooks and ancient tomes. His family was insisting on him carrying their legacy. Raziel wanted nothing but to please his family that he loved dearly, but once when couldn't muster any kind of magical prowess, his family took some drastic measures to ensure their lineage wouldn't die. Enacting an ancient ritual trying to manifest an old god from a forbidden plane of existence in order for them to become vessels for this being’s power. This ritual, however, required multiple sacrifices, which didn't go unnoticed by the King back then. By the time the soldiers arrived to stop the ritual, they were in for a surprise. Dead wizards laid on the grounds of the tunnels beneath the grand mansion. The only survivor was Raziel, he had been placed right at the center of the summoning circle, whether to be a sacrifice or the host for the foreign god, no one knew. At the tender age of seven, Raziel didn't have a concrete answer as to what his family was planning for him. He just wanted to forget everything.
With no other family left, he was sent to an orphanage, but the nuns and most of the other kids didn't want anything to do with him. The mysterious tattoos that covered his arms were a constant reminder for everyone of what his family had done. Despite his eagerness to please others in order to gain their affection, it never worked in his favor. He ended up becoming a loner with no one to talk to. But all changed when a foreign kid arrived at the same orphanage. His name was Grant. Loud and unruly, he was quickly ostracized for being a troublemaker; and to no one's surprise, he ended up befriending the other loner kid, Raziel. They talked about everything and nothing at the same time, they were just happy not to be alone anymore. Grant told Raziel that the reason he had traveled all the way to their land was because he wanted to become a knight and convinced Raziel to become knights together.
It took another six years, but they finally were able to become squires, and it would take another five for Grant to be granted a knighthood. Grant refused at first, since he wanted to become knights together with Raziel, but Raziel had been told to need another year of training since he still lacked what was needed. Since this was Grant's dream, he didn't want him waiting on him, so he made a promise to Grant; he would train harder for another year and finally join him on the field. But that oath was never fulfilled. Another year passed, and Raziel was indubitably the strongest knight candidate, he was sure they would grant him the title, but a month before the ceremony, he heard the conversation between the royal knights and the King's envoy. Despite the fact that he was indeed more than qualified, his tainted bloodline was more than enough for him to be denied the title. This revelation and the fact that he endured another year of insults alone was too much for him. He ended up leaving the barracks that same night. While he was sorry, he wouldn't be able to be by Grant's side, he needed to leave this place.
Raziel traveled and offered his services as a bodyguard, always doing his best to hide his tattoos from anyone that might recognize him. He made some money, and with it, he managed to travel even further. He was content with just having people rely on him, but always tried to ignore the fact that at the end of the day, their relationship with him was more akin to a transaction. One night at a tavern, a suspicious individual approached him. Despite not having been able to perform magic in more than a decade, Raziel could still sense those who practiced it, the old man in front of him seemed to be very attuned to his craft. Raziel would later discover the man to be a warlock after he easily disposed of a band of trolls attacking them, all without breaking a sweat. Questioning why he needed his help at all, Raziel wondered what the old geezer’s real intentions were. Much to his surprise, he said he was looking for an apprentice, and that he sensed the young warrior had a hidden potential that needed to be explored and he wanted to help him with that.
Naturally, he was reluctant at first, but the man's insistence won him over. Over the course of two years, Raziel managed to harness his power to a certain degree, being able to open portals to freely travel to one place or another. So far, only he could cross them, was also limited to the number of times he could open them and the distance he could travel with them. While he was disappointed about his shortcomings, his new teacher seemed awfully pleased with his progress. In fact, he was a little too happy about it. Raziel had lowered his guard and felt a little too comfortable with the old man, yeah, he was and odd person at times, but looked really invested in his training. Still, he should've listened to his gut, once he felt his master's interest was turning into an obsession.
On a stormy night, Raziel woke up to find himself naked and chained to a pillar, runes and sigils having been drawn all over his body. In front of him was his teacher, equally naked and with the same symbol plastered across his own body. An angry and confused Raziel demanded to know what was happening. His teacher was quick about it, he wanted a new younger body to replace his old one, but he needed one whose magical talent was vast but barely touched upon. One he could mold and sync with his own knowledge. The fact that Raziel’s was more than strong enough to withstand the process of the soul exchange was what made the painful years of trying to reawaken his magic worth it.
Broken by the fact that he had been used, Raziel reckoned the fact that perhaps his family did the same all those years ago. They groomed him into giving away his very being for their own selfish goals. He was furious, not just with them, but with himself for having let them. He tried to open a portal to escape, but the mad old warlock had made sure the chains holding were dampening his magical abilities. The soul exchange had started and Raziel began losing consciousness, but just when he was about to vanish, something inside him kept him anchored to his body. This presence was weird, it felt like he himself was the one doing it but at the same time it felt foreign. Regardless, it kept on building more and more power, the soul of the warlock felt it mid transit, but it was too late to stop the spell when a huge explosion of mystic energy exploded from within Raziel's body. It destroyed a big part of his surroundings and incinerated the wicked soul of his former master, leaving his wrinkled husk of a body to rot.
Free from his restraints, Raziel succumbed to exhaustion, while unconscious, he heard a voice, his voice but much deeper and commanding. It told him it wasn't time yet, as he felt himself going into a deep slumber. The next morning, after waking up, looking over at the cold body of the old bastard who had fooled him, he made a vow to himself to never let himself be swayed by other people's lies again. He was only going to look out for himself and that was it. From that day on, Raziel stopped being of service to others. He became selfish and arrogant. Using his increasing powers for his own gain regardless of any consequences for the next for the next fifteen years.
The noble Raziel became the well-known, callous criminal Razz, The Uncaged. At least that's what his wanted posters call him. Unbeknownst to him, a certain figure of his past is behind his trail; Grant the former knight turned adventurer extraordinaire along with his companions are looking for him since they need of his abilities to enter a so-called impenetrable fortress, what they don't know is that Grant misses him and also wants to recruit him to his side.
