A last minute spur of the moment decision I made that I wanted to do for no reason at all. Dress as Hunter S. Thompson at FCN. This has nothing to do with the Japan theme at all but hey why not.
This is as close as I could get to the clothes Depp wears in the first segment of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
1. hat - Just a generic bucket hat. The one on screen is more of an off white color but this was the only one I could find that had the green under brim. Only 6 bucks!
2. sunglasses - Depp wears a pair of Ray Ban Shooter RB3139 in the film. To get a real pair of these would run you close to $200. I managed to find a replica for $10. The only noticeable difference is the crossbar on the fake is a tortoise color instead of cream color and the arms don't wrap around the ear like the real ones. I may get a real pair someday cause I actually like them.
3. Analog wrist watch - I really didn't research this too well. I'm not sure exactly what kind of watch Depp is wearing. Whatever it is it's probably expensive. I also screwed up here. I could have sworn it was a white face watch but I went back last night to the film and found that its a chrome watch with a black face and leather band. Oh well, I don't think most people will pick up on that but the watch does look period so it looks OK. Just 10 bucks!
4. Leather wrist strap - Depp wears a large leather strap on his right wrist. Really hard to tell exactly if it was a store bought item or made just for the movie. I kinda just fudged it. I bought a large leather strap made for fossil watches and it looks fine. The strap was $16 but I do own a few fossil watches so I am going to use it later on as well.
5. cigarette holder - I don't know anything about smoking but it turns out its not actually a cigarette holder. Its actually a filter. Lucky enough they still make the same exact one used in the film. It's a TarGard Permanent Cigarette Filter System. Only 5 bucks! Then I made a fake cigarette out of some paper, really cant tell unless you look closely.
6. fly swatter - Now something as simple as a fly swatter turned out to be a bitch to find, oh because its still kinda cold out and there aren't any flies to swat yet! Managed to find this one stuffed in a clearance bin at K-Mart for 50 cents. Again, not screen accurate. The one in the film is a white one with a plastic handle, but the one I found will do. Didn't have white so I got a yellow one to match the glasses.
7. shirt - Now something I though would be impossible to find and probably didn't exist opposed to the fly swatter, actually does exist. There are one or two costume shops that actually make reproductions of this shirt just because of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I'm not entirely sure if this was a real shirt that made back in the early 70s or was made just for the film. The printing is almost dead on to the shirt used in the film but the reproduction is made of smooth rayon while the screen used one was fuzzy. Still looks awesome and I may wear this as just a regular shirt from time to time. I like it! One of the more pricey items, coming in at a whopping $35 but it is incredibly well made in the USA shockingly.
8. sneakers - These were a no brainer. I am a hard core Converse All-Stars fan. I have been wearing Chuck Taylors for over 15 years. I knew instantly what they where when I saw them on screen. Just a basic pair of unbleached low tops. I lucked out and found these on a clearance rack in the Converse outlet store for only 20 bucks! They say they were b grade cause of a slight defect. I can't find anything wrong with them.
9. pants - Later on in the film Depp is wearing mostly those really high 70s shorts and I wouldn't be caught dead wearing those. Thankfully the costume I wanted he was wearing just a pair of khaki pants. The ones on screen are a bit lighter than the ones I have but I already have these so I'm not going out to buy another pair of lighter khaki pants cause frankly I hate khaki and I don't want another pair that I will never wear.
So there you have it! I hope this will be another crazy awesome addition to my movie characters like Pee Wee and Marty McFly. Keep your eyes peeled for this nut job running around FCN avoiding the bats.
