I see a flag
It does not wave
For there is no wind.
It is held up
By the straying frail
Branches of a tree.
I see a country
To whom no one waves
In need of wind.
It is held up
By greed, lies,
And selfish policies.
I see a nation
Who’s flag does not wave
Needing winds of change
To hold it up
By returning them to their former glory
So the flag and county can fly true
It does not wave
For there is no wind.
It is held up
By the straying frail
Branches of a tree.
I see a country
To whom no one waves
In need of wind.
It is held up
By greed, lies,
And selfish policies.
I see a nation
Who’s flag does not wave
Needing winds of change
To hold it up
By returning them to their former glory
So the flag and county can fly true

The simplicity isn't as narrow as you think and that simplicity is what gives the connection that bolder meaning. Poetry is better meant as an expression on ideals and emotion, sometimes they are out in the open and sometimes they are obscured. There is a point of being too forward but I doubt you approached that line. :3
