More World-Building Wednesday vehicle posting, featuring something I started in early 2023, forgot about for several months, and then rediscovered and finished in mid-December 2023.
Not a whole lot to say here, I designed this gunship/shuttle for Domarion and Domi to make use of in their mercenary/bounty hunting/general space adventures. It follows a lot of the same aesthetics as most of my other ship designs, featuring forward-facing headlamps with additional infrared illuminators for navigation and weapons systems, and the primary forward-facing weapons being a pair of autocannons while additional secondary weapons are retracted into the wings until needed.
Find Me On:
FurAffinity ◈ Weasyl ◈ Ko-Fi ◈ Inkbunny
One thing I figured out in the time between first designing this and actually finishing it is that my fascination with sticking wings and the like, even big chunky ones like this, onto starships might not be as absurd as I once thought--apparently, dealing with heat dissipation in the vacuum of space is a legitimate issue, so those large wings could be housing radiators, heatsinks, and other thermal management equipment. I love it when I can find a good explanation for my bullshit aesthetic choices.

I like the headlamps as I feel they really give the ship a touch of personality and direction in the design! I do the same in a lot of my starship designs! I really quite like your work with this! Your design choices and style, lol like the big chonky wings, are also nice little touches that gives your design here a lot of memorability and help it stand out from the abundance of spaceships I see online! lol it's fun when science and engineering concepts can retroactively fit into them and give justification or just help make the design seem more deep and real, but I've always found the best thing is just finding an aesthetic and design style you like and have fun! Let it be original and fun and inspirational to the imagination of others, lol all the lore and stuff can follow in behind!
Again, great work! This deserves many more comments and favorites!

Thank you very much!
The justification I always used for the headlamps is that a lot of these ships, especially those that are shuttles and the like, would definitely operate in areas where floating debris and small asteroids and other ships could pose a threat, so it helps to be able to see these things to navigate around them. Vehicles for industrial, mining, and construction use would definitely also benefit from headlamps and spotlights for their work, and law enforcement, military, and bounty hunter ships probably spend time patrolling around in asteroid fields and planetary rings so it would come in handy to have a little extra light as well. Not the most exciting reason to make them look like Cars, But In Space, but a very practical reason!
I too find that some of my best work comes from getting the idea out there first, and then deciding what to do with it later. Letting things fall into place rather than having a set direction I want them to go in has definitely helped me fill in some holes in my worldbuilding over the years and expand in new and interesting directions I may not have otherwise.
Thanks again! I definitely appreciate the encouragement. I sometimes wonder if I'm doing something "wrong" by posting art of space vehicles to furry art sites, but there is also a surprising amount of interest at times.

Well it also makes sense too! lol Space is quite dark! You might be in situations where you need to identify small objects or locate them OR give some kind of signal to another craft that might be damaged, or help the craft trying to find you because YOU'RE damaged! Plus in my designs, I use that as the point of where the tractor beam projectors might be, or if I want to bring in hard sci fi, the passive sensors and lasers that move away small stellar debris or particles that would otherwise continually rain against your ship and damage it! lol I like feeling like I've put a lot of thought into the design and the machinery to help add that extra layer of depth and realism them helps my readers, and the people who look at my art, have an easier time suspending their disbelief! But it's like we were both saying, that's largely a retroactive process after just getting the cool idea down first. I've got certain rules in my series, and to a degree I try to start with certain details or thoughts about the engineering of the vehicle, but I try to keep that light so as never to really strangle an idea I want to do. It's more like it's there to just help me maintain direction and a sense between the different species in my series. I don't know how many species and different technologies you have in your setting, but guidelines like that help me.
Speaking of, I'd love to know more about your setting! Your design work is top notch, and I can only imagine your worldbuilding is much the same!
lol and don't ever be discouraged! While furries are the main users here, it's not just for furry art! It's an art website first, and the point is to express yourself! here's so many interests and sub-divisions in the furry fandom! There'll always be people who will find interest in your work!
