Fraternity initiation dare.
(Full honesty, I wasn't planning to have him sneak up that close but mucked up a bit on the panel/layout, once I realized that it seemed a bit too late to redo so I added in the sliver of the door John's sneaking towards to give at least a little reason for how his path got that close.)
