Well, the bossman would have a legitimate argument for that, too. Oliver was definitely in the right for calling bossman's bad behaviour out, but it's something he should have stayed behind to talk to him about in private. It's fine to call out your boss on their bad behaviour, but doing it in front of others is no bueno. It was an unnecessary power move that put Oliver just as low on the civility scale as bossman.
Technically this was in private, especially since the other person concerned was there. The only down was that HR should get involved if this is a big enough company to worry about that kind of thing (and if they're taking international contracts, I'd assume they are). That said, this is all for today's modern corporate bullshit, and knowing Oliver, he would very happily walk out the door on his own to defend his friend (he pretty much said as much). Relationships are more important than your job, even just friends. You can always get another job.
Thankfully, bossman doesn't seem like a bad person overall, just a bit stressed, and can admit his mistake. Respect.

As someone who was laid off seven months ago and hasn't been able to get even an interview since then, I have doubts about this. Ten years of industry experience, six of those years in a senior-level position, nearly 30 years total professional experience, and I can't even get an interview.
So, while I'm not keen to, I can argue the other side of that equation. Perhaps, sometimes, a job—a livelihood—really is more important.

As someone who spent tens of thousands of dollars on a specialized training school, spent over a decade in the field of said specialization, and was had to retire early from that career that defined so much of myself and was forced completely reinvent myself from the ground up... and then do it again when that new career was no longer viable either... yeah, it's entirely possible to get a new job.
That said, sucks about you being laid off. Sorry about that. Best of luck.

Something just struck me after looking at this page for the 4th time. Most people put wolves in positions of authority in a company. In my story, "There's No Way", I have a European grey wolf as president of the company my protagonist works for and I've seen similar situations in other stories and comics.
