Quick Details:

Race: Animal-Men (They are the generations distant offspring of Shifters who stayed in their 'were' forms for too long and lost the ability to change back into Human forms.)

Background: Started as a Fighting-Man and Laborer among his herd, eventually taking leave and going in pursuit of magical studies. After three cycles (years), he was recognized as a Mage, had his spellbook made, and was given a simple magical item of his choice. From there, he ended his studies and took up the role of a Merchant, settling in the village of Wen once he had enough money to buy a house there.

AD&D Equivalence: Fighting-Man until level 8, Magic-User until level 10. Both classes have grown half a level each since then.
