It is actually something that happens to me irl all the time. I get easily alerted by random movements or shadows in the corner of my vision. Plus I'm afraid of the dark and am prone to paranoid thoughts and superstitious thinking due to my mental condition. This makes being home alone a mildly tense experience which I have certain ways of coping with. Mainly playing videos on my phone to announce my presence and don't be alone with my own thoughts as well as turning lights on.

Very very late comment, but I get this a lot, too. I think it has something to do with saccades and how the brain "deletes and fills in" the blurred vision during the eye movement. Same reason why if you stare at a clock and look away and back quickly, it seems like the second hand stayed put for longer than one second. Funny little slice of life, though!

For me it's mostly tied to stress and anxiety levels. I get less of it now that I'm on a higher dose of antipsychotic medication.
