Babble or Duolingo are good. Don't do the subtitled shows thing because localizers change scripts for things that don't translate well outside of Japanese. Idioms, slang, regional vernacular, etc. don't always make sense to foreign audiences so localizers will intentionally change it in the subtitles and dubbed versions so it's more understandable/ enjoyable. So if you try learning that way you could end up embarrassing yourself.
I used Duo to help me get my Hirigana and Katakana then Linq which is whole books reading documents in Japanese. Both are pretty dang good together with Duo helping in the beginning to pick up the lettering and linq helping to develop a vocab if you have the brain space to stretch and get into it
I've tryed duolingo to figure out it kinda sucks for learning the grammar. It doesn't feature a grammar dictionary or a vocabulary list. I quitted after a while because i invested a few weeks to learn the same 3 phrases over and over again.
But it was quite handy for learning the hiragana and katakana characters.
Renshuu was very handy for learning vocabulary and grammar in my own pace
