Quetzalcoatl - Iridescent Obsidian
Obsidian is a vitreous volcanic rock that is particularly recognisable for its deep black colour. With the right experience, it can be broken into razor-sharp shards. This is one of the reasons why this stone was particularly prized by pre-Columbian civilisations, who used it to make weapons among other uses.
Close to certain arcanic nodes on Earth, this solid mass of lava has been gorged with magic. Once extracted from its gangue, obsidian can retransmit this energy. Its iridescent reflections are particularly colourful, reminiscent of a rainbow.
Carrying iridescent obsidian with self slowly changes the metabolism. The size of the stone influences this metamorphosis time, with a large sample having a faster impact than a smaller one. The same applies to the power stored by the stone, which can be detected by the vividness of the colours : an almost black obsidian is discharged and will therefore make very few changes.
Metamorphosis by iridescent obsidian is characterised by a feathered serpentine form, usually winged. It generally takes several days to reach a complete form, giving the body time to store the stone's energy and grow in size, or even develop magic. This type of transformation can sometimes take several months if the piece of obsidian is small and weak.
It is said that the first human to use this stone was elevated to the rank of deity, named Quetzalcoatl by pre-Columbian civilisations.

I wonder whether your compliment about the plumage is influenced by your ornithological nature or not.
As for the first human to experience the effects of this stone, unfortunately I have no answer. It is entirely possible that the curse option created fear and withdrawal in the individual, hiding his nature but with the possibility that other mortals might have caught sight of him. The blessing option is also possible, as if new gods were bestowing benefits on a chosen one who then declared himself a god.
Unfortunately I was not at the event, so I can not tell you more.

absolutely gorgeous illustraliton Owl. the feathering in particular is very well done.
Also kind of partial to the slow burn transformations. gives people time to come to terms with their changes and adapt. or just draws out the horror of the situation. really depends on the mindset.

(The idea of a natural tf progression (cell duplication/replacement etc) where over several years the victim will change to whatever they were cursed or infected with. As an example, an arrogant tourist is rude to a local Sharman, and the Sharman curses the man, a curse that'll make his exterior match with his personality. The man scoffs it off feeling no different, but the curse's effect is like that of a cancer, foreign cells are mutating and duplicating within his body, slowly but surely transforming his DNA structure into something completely new.)
(Depending on what the man transforms into, even a possible gender change determines how he'll react, so if he was cursed to be a form of lizard etc (possibly called a cold-blooded scoundral for his rude behaviour) Over the months or years his hair could start falling out leaving him bald, were his skin would dry out and become rough. His teeth could start falling out to better fit the animal he's becoming, by this point the man could be oblivious to the fact that he's becoming an animal, and could just see it as bad genetics. Eventually his complexion would become a sickly green and his appetite would change, longing for bugs and raw meat, eventually his skin would start shedding away, revealing scales. Possibly hides away out of fear of being seen until eventually his transformation is complete)

As said previously, I can not tell how the first mortal reacted.
Yes, after some point, the stone becomes inert, like a common obsidian. If a mortal sensitive to this magic were to take one that didn't have enough energy, there might be slow or barely perceptible changes that would stop halfway. The result would be a kind of humanoid caught between the human, if we're starting from a human base, and the quetzalcoatl, with hairless skin but rough patches or semblance of feathers, smaller ears, the beginnings of a tail after the coccyx...
