Greetings all,
I've recently published version 1.01 of my game, "Faye's Donkey Farm" over on Itch.io. It's available for free, though donations if you enjoy it are welcome, as is any feedback you might have. This is my first complete game, and although small, I'm pretty happy with what I've learned and look forward to working on future projects with what I know now.
You can find the page for the game with downloads here: https://black-robed-mage.itch.io/fayes-donkey-farm
After your car breaks down on your drive home from college, you find yourself stranded in the endless grain fields of the middle of nowhere. When you stumble across a farm, you think you might be saved, but the mysterious owner, Faye, seems to have other plans for you. Can you escape before you become a permanent resident of her barn?
Faye's Donkey Farm is an HTML based text adventure game where you have to find a way to escape from the farm or be turned into a donkey in many myriad ways. The game currently features over 30 different game overs and four endings.

The spellbook is definitely what I'm least satisfied with at this point, even though it taught me a lot about puzzles and hinting. I've been adding more and more helps to it, including just giving the ending spells out in the list.
I'll put together a full spell list and figure out how and where to share it for people who just want / need the answers.

Played a lot.
It is mostly play against unknown features. First: I stuck in fields, trying to find a logic of fairy spotting, first I think is was just random, then found I have to wait in real time.
The book is the hardest part. With ten words, there are 1024 spell variants. Maybe, there has to be suggestion of possible spells in other locations.
There are no inventory, of course It is only the key, but having 3 pieces of paper with natu-retr-ruv will be useful for check state.
Maybe, you have to display donkeybrain value, because it is hard to guess what level needs for a proper ending.
Maybe, allow to steal the book to use spells. Or, the book contains only the list of vaiid spells. The spellwords you have to collect in game, not only 3 last, but everything (for example, ASNS in the barn looking donkey photos).
The fact it is SFW is wonderful!
luc-fae-atru = permanent ability to see where fairy is.

I'm also not satisfied with how the spellbook turned out. Even with the hinting and the ending hints giving spells away, it's not in a place I'm happy with. In future projects with this kind of puzzle, I'll work in better environmental details for what a spell does, like how the repair spell is found in a toolbox, and a better UI for casting spells so the parameters are clearer and players can know when they're on the right track to finding a complete spell.
Other than that, I'm pretty happy with how things turned out and I appreciate the positive response the game has gotten.

Just encountered a little bug(?)
If you're not transformed at all, and use the book to learn that Faye's in the bedroom, approaching her and letting her comfort you all the way through a transformation doesn't work. When you get to the point you're about to go on all fours, and it gives the option to run and stay put, the stay put option doesn't work, but running does.
I think this could be a missing 'ending flag' or something.
Despite that, it's a very, VERY good game!
Also, are there any other spell combinations? If so, please tell me!!

I'll take a look; I'm pretty sure if you're not transformed at all, you should be forced to run, as in "coming to your senses", but there may be a weird link in there at some boundary of settings. Thanks for the heads up.
I'm working on putting together a proper ending guide for the next update, which will contain all of the spells. Most of them are listed in the endings list. For reference, there are 10 total spells in game.

Well, in my case, any ending where I'm a dumb Donk at the end, means a happy ending for me lol.
I only recently started trying to get all the endings (properly this time, (so trying to avoid Donking out), but I'm unsure where I can get the "Natu" spell word from. Could you gimme a hint/location?

The path to the Natu spell starts by going to the edge of the farm, trying to get through the grain, and then waiting for a bit; you should explore from there on your own with different levels of change, I'm sure you'll enjoy the different options you can encounter.
I've tried doing that and met the fairy on several occasions on different levels of transformation and Donkey brain. But it either gives me a bad ending either through being too Donkey brained, or failing the test. And when I prove I'm Human, it only sends me back to the edge of the farm.
Is there another timed option alongside the fairy? Or am I doing a dumb and missing something? >w<

You have one of two options to get the spell; you can either go with a moderate level of donkey brain, around when Bray turns into Bray Forcefully (if it changes when you attempt to cross the field you're golden), and then complete the test and ask the Fae questions. Ask them to teach you magic and you'll learn Natu. The other way is to go visit the Fae just below max Donkey Brain but resist willingly joining the farm, and the fae will teach you the spell for entertaining them.
Perfect, thanks a ton!
This'll definitely help, as I've surprisingly never had either happen to me naturally, so far at least.
Can I also suggest a possible feature be added? The endings where you need Faye to be in certain locations can get a tad boring when you need to keep cycling back and forth to them from different locations (for example jumping back and forth between the Silo and Truck until she arrives at the Truck). I think to possibly counteract this, add a "Call Out To Faye" button, which'll get her attention from wherever on the farm and make her arrive at your location. Of course, only if it's possible and you wanna do it. It is your game after all, and a good one at that <3

I wanted those encounters to feel like random, almost secret encounters; overall I wanted different endings to be different levels of obvious / consistent, and I'm fine with some being more difficult to find. I realize that can make some harder to repeat when you're just craving a specific encounter, but in general I think it works well enough for what the game is.
I'm not sure how much I'll open up debug tools in the future, as a lot of the backend wouldn't exactly be easy to add a button for, but it's not impossible and depends on my workload elsewhere; I do want to move on to other projects in the future.

I mean, they'll definitely have transformation as a part of them, that's kinda my brand. I want to expand a bit more into how I use them and build more of a narrative and theming; I'm happy with how this game came out as a small experience that's very focused and constrained, but I'd like to expand on game mechanics and build more legitimate puzzles and exploration.
The hint system was added as part of my iterative process of trying to make the puzzle easier to figure out without giving away the answers. In the end, I think the book is neat, but not a great puzzle overall; figuring out spells is mostly trial and error, though it taught me a lot about puzzle design for future games.
The connections are tied to how many spells the pair show up together in, and the way it was set up winds up having some overlap depending on what additional words you've unlocked, and I couldn't figure out an elegant solution to that problem.
The best way to get those endings, if brute force isn't your thing, is to use the ending hint system on the main menu and either key off the hints or just expose the spells.

I think it's more about not knowing what precise sentence that was needed to cast a spell.
Locate Man
Locate Fae
Man temporary Ass
Man temporary Fae
These are super easy to get without any hints
The two that advances or removes the curse makes sense once I deducted it from the hints. Same for the one that pretty much indicated that the car breaking down was the Fae's doing
The one that's an instant bad ending is a bit vague, I don't quite get how those words would piece together such a result.
The remaining two had my head scratching, apparently Asnus, Aturns, Ruvr, Retru have a part to play together, with what? Omnus? Natu?
Sidenote: That error with the Asnus Natu is confusing, sometimes the hint says it's weak and sometimes it's a regular connection

The spells were intended to have a scaling level of difficulty, so some would be really easy to figure out and some would be harder to solve; the problem is that the harder ones are not really solveable, they have to be brute forced because the hinting and spell words never came together as well as I would have liked.
I do appreciate that you were able to work out story details from the spells, as that was also intended.
What are the hints for the two you are missing?

Yeah, I ended up brute forcing it. It's less about missing hints and more about what errors needs to be fixed in order for people to figure out the combinations
Fau-Aturns, and Asnus-Natu need to be regular connections instead of weak connections. (Fau-Aturns showed up as weak while Asnus-Natu shifts between weak and regular.)
Might need an extra hint such as Omnus-Aturns is weak connection or something in order to figure out the tenth spell

I appreciate you spending time and effort to debug my game, but I'm probably not going to release any more major updates for this one and instead push my lessons learned forward to my next efforts.
Again though, I do want to reiterate I appreciate your feedback and debugging.

It's no problem, despite that minor logical error. The rest of the game is really well polished and knitted together, I LOVE how it well it keeps track of physical and mental scores and the attention to detail in certain scenes.
I do wish physical score has more than just ears and tail thought, that 'stumbling' scene trying to figure out whether the MC belongs on twos or fours is the spiciest thing I've played so far. Shame that once you snapped out of it the scene instantly jumps backed to being just ears and tails, no mentions of changing back and stuff. Would be great to have bad ends about being too physically changed too, aside from mental ones

The escape endings take physical and mental changes into account.
I avoided making things too complicated because the project started out as exploring game programming and grew from there, and rather than dig too deep and make something that would take me years to finish, I decided to scope a project I could complete within a few months, and use those lessons learned to do something more complex and more of a "game" in the future.
Hopefully all of this pays off in my next effort.

Well, I meant it in the sense that the physical change limit doesn't stop at the ears and tail. Buuut that would be overcomplicated to do, considering one would basically need to rewrite multiple scenes to add in scenarios where player has gotten hooves and/or on all fours.
But yeah good luck on your next project! Looking forward to the next one.
But yeah good luck on your next project! Looking forward to the next one.
As you note, having to write scenes around hooves and being stuck on all fours is far more difficult, as a lot of the scene descriptions and interactions depend on the player being able to move and handle things freely; sections like going up and down stairs and opening doors would all need to be reworks. While that's not impossible, it would have been a more complex system to work around.
Again, thank you for your feedback and compliments, glad you enjoyed it so much.

Those are all fair desires to be sure, but the concept for this game was that Faye turns people into normal donkeys to live on her farm, so they weren't part of the planning here. You are, incidentally, not the first to ask for anthros, though, and that may show up in a future project.
Thank you for the compliments, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much, and I appreciate you liking it enough to want more.

I don't currently plan future updates for this one, as I feel I got what I want out of it as a first project and it's in a stale, complete place right now. It feels like a full experience and I think my time would be better spent on other projects that are more game-shaped. Hopefully I'll have something along those lines by the end of the year.
