I use a subcontractor to install racks for systems and such so I don't have to deal with the construction, codes and such.
Said sub called me to let me know the rack was in and ready for use.
Got there and discovered that the installed has 3 feet of usable space.
The rack specified for the job had 6 feet of available space, which would have been 3/4 filled with hardware. The camera system contractor had installed his rack and only left me this much space.
This is an object lesson in fitting six pounds of gear into a two pound sack.
Imagination, high power magnets and desperation succeed again!

I hope there's a little notebook and/or file saying what hooks where and why ...
One of my brothers had the ultimate rat's nest behind his stereo, he screamed bloody hell when my solution was to yank every single wire and start it fresh (and tested as we went - finding several old RCA cables that fit best in the trash!)

I have a binder in my office with all the layouts, designations, IP addresses and subnets, configurations and passwords for every last bit of the networks in my office stored in a hotel type fire resistant wall safe ( scavenged several when a hotel was torn down some years ago ). I reference and update it regularly for my own benefit.
Gave the combination to the owner and CFO in case of emergency. Only the CFO has retained the information. When we bring in outside contractors to do work I don't want to deal with they are allowed access to a copy of the relevant sections. Depressingly they usually either can not or do not want to understand it.
Be a terrible situation if I were to go missing and the combination lost. Especially if they pay to get it opened and only find a note saying " Sayonara Suckers ".
I should be ashamed of thinking that...Meh, maybe next month if I have the time.
