I think the issue might be the shark being nearly the same colour as the background. If I concentrate on its contours, the shape is quite fitting for a mako. This angle and the flaring gills would make it look chonkier like a great white. This can be seen on some fotos of these animals.
I very much like the theme and the picture has some nice artistic qualities, such as the dynamics of the entire scene. If one focuses predominantly on the realism aspects, there might be some room for improvement, but I think this image works well with your more abstract style.
