After serving the required length of time as an Emerald Guard, so long as a son is able to take their place, echidnas of the No Zone often enjoy retirement and go back to their more rural lifestyle.

In the case of Zathair, though, learning about the development of Zone Jail made him curious about the rest of the world, and as such he began a journey once Zabre was competent. Despite being only Znuckles' great-grandfather, Zathair is technically much older in the day due to having travelled into different timelines with Chaos Control.

This nomadic journey of multiple lifetimes has given him great wisdom and power, and as a result is a very kinky yet friendly fellow, eager to have fun with others.
