SFM is still a good option, even more if you know how the lighting works, everything I do is in SFM and sometimes people don't believe me and say it's blender.
I only use blender to create the models, but making a render is a headache, even more if you make a model from 0, making the shaders and adapting the textures is a headache... That the result is amazing? yes, but not all of us have the time and the patience to use blender.
Besides, there are already people working on better versions of SFM, there is one called Pragma-Filmmaker, but it is still in beta phase.

I had to do a bit of “Trial By Fire” in learning Blender. I use it primarily for all the models that are made exclusively for it and it does produce great results. While I intend to use Blender more in the future, in the end I still prefer using SFM mainly because it is much more user friendly and cheaper (since a lot of decent Blender models are sold at a premium).
As someone who has used Source for over a decade across Gmod and SFM, I can relate to this all too damn well.
Blender may offer far more than the limits of SFM, but in doing so presents a far greater challenge in learning it to even a basic level, let alone mastering it to half the potential we could bring from SFM.
SFM may have a gradual Learning Curve...
But by comparison, Blender has a Sharp Learning Corner that is only made steeper without help or the time and motivation to dedicated solely to it.
