UN Security Council Resolution 678
Adopted by the Security Council at its 2963rd meeting on 29 November 1990 by 12 votes to 2 (Cuba and Yemen), with 1 abstention (China).
The Security Council,

Authorizes Member States co-operating with the Government of Kuwait, unless Iraq on or before 15 January 1991 fully implements, as set forth in paragraph 1 above, the above-mentioned resolutions, to use all necessary means to uphold and implement resolution 660 (1990) and all subsequent relevant resolutions and to restore international peace and security in the area
Some ask whether it's moral to use force to stop the rape, the pillage, the plunder of Kuwait. And my answer - extraordinary diplomatic efforts having been exhausted to resolve the matter peacefully. Then the use of force is moral.

I have pledged that this will not be another Vietnam, and let me reassure you here today, it won't be another Vietnam.
- George H. W. Bush, January 28, 1991
The skies over Baghdad have been illuminated...
- Bernard Shaw, CNN, January 16, 1991
So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

And Bush kept his word too on this.
Sadly they replaced the F-16s from Truax near me this past summer, replacing them with F-35s. Naturally the extreme leftists had meltdowns over the new jet arriving, mainly due to their noise, but also "They can carry a nuclear bomb!" and "They carry weapons on board!" Admittedly the 35s are a bit louder, but not the "Brain Damaging and Hearing damaging level " The Locos bitch about and STILL demand the plane be banned.
Truax base is also the only fighter squadron in central northern US between Montana and New York, mainly in case of some rogue armed Canada Goose comes in I suppose. The only time I witnessed them 'Hot' was on 9-11, when 4 F-16s took off on full afterburner and with AIM-9s on the wing tips heading towards an alleged threat at the Sears tower in Chicago.

It's time already for the old guard to retire. This year the Viper celebrates its 50th anniversary of its first flight, 20 January accidentally, or 2 February officially. My country's Block 15 OCU and Block 32+ are slated to be replaced by Rafales and F-15EX in the next few years (possibly after the election this year)
The weeks of January and February of 1991 are forever burned into my mind.
Looking back it seemed busy, tense and at times comical, especially during the times when we where suppose to be in fear...Think Scud missiles overhead the first night or the attacks or being chased by Palestinians with a car bomb. But through it all there was the comforting sounds of the F-15 and F-16 in the air. Who needs angles when there are Eagles and Falcons to protect you.

They said Baghdad was the best defended area after Ruhr and Hanoi, yet F-117s hammered Iraqi targets with complete impunity. Two flights of US Army AH-64s breaches a hole in Iraqi radar coverage early in the 17th, where coalition strike packages, including B-52s inbound from Barksdale AFB Louisiana, can flow toward their targets under watchful eyes of Navy E-2s and USAF E-3s - Shock and Awe
Indeed but for this case, AMRAAM only reaches initial operational capability in late '92 during the operation Southern Watch.
Initial F-16A/B were not initially BVR capable due to its cheap, lightweight nature. Only after block 25 and retrofitted block 10/15 were F-16 capable of carrying AIM-120

Nicely done on the lawn dart! The neighbor unit use to have them before converting to 35’s. I was always amazed how sleek they looked without the (fuel) bags, and how they just shot off into the sky without the weight. They would be back within 45 minutes of course, but it was sort of like in a martial arts flick or early DBZ when they drop then training weights.
I have a certain nostalgic fondness for the F-16. Most summers since I was about a year old I have watched performances by the USAF Thunderbirds, and growing up in the wake of Desert Storm and through Bosnia, Kosovo, and the GWOT era, the F-16 was always present and a common sight in TV news footage, video games, and flight sims.
I always looked at it as a quintessential, modern American fighter jet, and to me it has always embodied one of the greatest expressions of unsurpassed military air power. I've always loved the look of this this sleek, nimble fighter and the roar of its afterburner. I can't even begin to imagine a time when I might no longer see them shooting through the wild blue anymore :(
