I recently found an interesting long-running blog about analyzing interfaces in science-fiction, this idea being spurned by a post on the video-phone in the 1982 Blade Runner movie. I wanted to solve the gaze correction problem and this lead me (after a tortuous path) to a persistence-of-vision design placing the image capture and display elements on the same rotor. This could have been built in the first half of the 20th century, before the development of digital circuits, although the half-turn delay would require something like the torsion wire delay line memory system.
