Riley is not a smoker, so he's most likely just trying to out-style his British comrade since he knows that out-performing Sylvia in a plane is out of the question!

Riley: Just looking up to our top ace, ma'am.
Sylvia: Well that's your first mistake.
Riley: No it's not- you told me to follow your lead and to learn well from you to stay alive. That's what I'm doing. 😏
