Charon, the ferryman of souls... To be honest, he is not the only one, but he's particularly well known in the region where I have settled. Several other types of soul ferryman exist, each often requiring a different type of offering to help the soul cross limbo safely.
Which also gives me the opportunity to say a few words about limbo itself and the River Styx.
Limbo is a replica of the corresponding world, but in a desolate and much less colourful version. Yet Limbo evolves at the same time as the world of the living, with ruins equivalent to existing buildings moving as cities are built or destroyed, and sprouts of dead trees growing where forests extend... Water, however, remains the missing element in this world.
The Styx, the mythological river of the flow of souls, would have us believe that it is a river that flows continuously, yet it only exists around its ferryman. It would seem that life itself is a flow, inextricably linked to water.

Charon is the best known, travelling on the River Styx.
But depending on the region, depending of the worlds, there are other entities that help souls to pass from one world to another when they have to reach a form of afterlife.
To name just a few of the psychopomps of the world where Charon can be found, we can take the example of Anubis from Egyptian mythology, the Guédé family of spirits in voodoo, certain angels or saints such as the Archangel Saint Michael and Saint Christopher, the Japanese Shinigami who are personifications of death in the same way that others call them 'The Grim Reaper', or the Mayan goddess Ixtab. Note that some rare mortals also claim to have the ability to soothe souls on the mortal realm to make them pass to the other side.
Of course, as I said earlier, this applies to all kinds of worlds. Other worlds have similar systems but have different names, such as Darnizhaan the Dead God from a dark universe (OOC - Stormbringer, from Michael Moorcock).
As for obtaining such a role, that can vary enormously. Some are born with this role at the same time as the souls are born on a world, others achieve a great feat to earn this privilege, others are stripped of their rank and relegated to this thankless task...
In any case, being a psychopomp is more complicated than it might seem.

The notion of strangeness is in comparison to a system known for the number of parameters that you change. I prefer neutrality.
However, to answer your question, there are some worlds that experience a form of chaos because such a role is missing. Or some of the pshychopomps feel lonely, a company can be a pleasant benefit to them.
I am convinced that it is possible to use some of my contacts so that we can help you achieve this dream, although I will probably not be the entity that hires you as such.
How about we discuss it in private, dear ?
