This incredible artwork come right out of nowhere, making my day. It was done by the very talented and charming
Kanthara who made this as a totally surprise in just one mere night!
It is not just the pure craftsmanship, the shading, structures, the smooth lines which deeply amaze me. It is also the details. They are, and this is not meant cocky in any way, equal to my own high requirements. If you look closely, both characters look like a manipulated movie shot. The clothes' drapes is realistic - and that is a hard task indeed! - the functional parts are there (for example, just examine Vivienne's boots or Jaquard's coat), and the proportions are completely right. And she actually used my character sheet, so this is Jaquard how I imagined him and want him to see. I mean, just look close, it is all there, even his stuffed breeches :D!
Mentioning the characters themselves, apart from the motion and their richness of detail, they are just so... perfect. Vivienne, the character of
Kanthara, is a tough, self confident fighter and yet an elegant, very feminine vixen. At least that is my impression. And now if you look at her, it is all there, in her pose, in her mimic, her body language. Same with my Jaquard; he is meant be demonical attractive and handsome. Yet, the most positive way to describe him is "anti-hero", and now just look at his smug grin!
After all my praising, which shows how much I love this wonderful, kind present, let me just conclude how perfect the characters are transcribed, with all the detail and the smooth posture and the body language. Dear Kanthara, I take my head off to you for your skills, and let me thank you again again and again for this awesome swashbuckling present!

To answer the question, my thought was that the swords are actually, at the same time, parrying the pistols that they were both about to point at each other. The pistols, you'll notice, are in their right hands, which makes them the attack weapons, whereas the swords are in the left, as parry weapons.
Basically they pushed each other's guns away, stepping forward to counter the range benefit.
(Yes, I put a lot of thought in the posing)
I appreciate the compliments! Thank you!
