The night Vasco turned Anton to be his son.
“Kill me.” the young man whispered, his voice out of breath and raspy from sheer exhaustion.
No. Not yet, the cardinal thought. Not once in his long life had he met anyone who had willingly returned to him and beg for death. Vasco could tell the young man had been through a lot as he had no more desire to face tomorrow.
The cardinal smiled. It was gentler this time. His blood thirst had gained a new haunting glimmer. “Not yet.” he said, calmly as he soothed Anton’s head. They were both blood soaked, but Vasco paid no mind to it. He had found it. The one he wanted to call his ‘son’.
“What if I grant you a new tomorrow instead, Mr. Aylsworth.”
Anton’s eyes shot wide open. There was fear in them. Fear mixed with desire. “Why?” he murmured “I have nothing else to life for on this damn earth.”
“In that case, my son.” Vasco said as he scratched his own wrist open with his fangs “My first order for you is to find a new meaning. You lost your family. Find yourself a new one.” He placed his wrist on Anton’s lips, allowing the young one to feed on him. “Once you do, return to me, my son. For I shall be your father.”
He did not hesitate. Anton drank. Without hesitation he accepted the gift Cardinal Vasco had granted him. His new father.
