A socially awkward boar receives a little too much help after he skips breakfast.
I've been sitting on this one for a while, so as a birthday gift to myself I figured I should upload it now that Kane has been fully realized! Big thanks to
Bleat House for the ref sheet! Hope you don't mind seeing more of this guy around in the future.
The office was abuzz with the fervent pitter-patter of keyboards and mouse clicks. Papers shuffled and printers whirred, but no voices could be heard. Every employee in the room was hard at work, all busily typing away at their desks. The air was stiff, complimented by an atmosphere muted by the droning sounds of business furs mechanically going through the motions, mindlessly toiling towards their next paychecks. Cold. Calculated. Corporate.
Kane loved this sound.
The relative silence, the focused tone, the clattering of keys against his thick fingers as he and his co-workers typed the day away. It was all music to the boar’s ears. The perfect working environment. If only every day were like this! he could make so much progress in all this perfect peace and quiet. He, like everyone else in the office, was totally focused on the task at hand, filling out forms as fast as his hands could allow, and there was absolutely nothing that could distract him from-
*guuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*
-and there it goes. His concentration abruptly shattered, Kane silently cursed as he glared accusingly down at the offender: his own empty stomach. ‘Great.’ He groaned internally. ‘Juuuuust great. This is what I get for skimping on breakfast this morning. Not like I had much of a choice since I was already running late, but why did I have to get hungry again so fast!? Lunch time isn’t for at least another hour or so, but can I even hold out that long? Oh, I just knew today would turn out bad when I slept through my alarm…Now I’ve gone and disturbed the peace and quiet…quiet…’
Kane’s runaway thoughts trailed off as he realized the office had grown silent. Too silent. Even the sounds of typing had vanished from the background noise, leaving only the ambient hum of computers. The boar slowly peered out from his office space and to his horror saw several pairs of eyes looking his way. They all knew it was him who had made the noise, and that realization made his heart sink. Kane reflexively backed into his desk, attempting to shrink himself away from the numerous gazes upon him, a task that proved to be impossible given just how big he actually was.
Standing at over 8 feet tall and more than a ton in weight, Kane was far and away the largest person who worked in the office. Most furs of his considerable bulk would be more commonly found in positions involving physical labor. Kane was a rare exception to the rule, preferring to work his brain rather than his muscles. However, most days his brain was often dwelling on how he towers over the rest of his co-workers, the next tallest barely reaching 5 feet. This size disparity is a source of both joy and anxiety for the big boar. Joy at being so big and imposing. Anxiety at drawing so much attention. Being “large and in charge” makes him feel good, more confident even. He’d try to get even bigger if it weren’t for the problems it caused in his daily life. Simply put, everything he interacts with is just not built for someone of his ample size. His ill-fitting uniform failed to hide his gut, and it seemed to show more by the day. Most doorways force him to duck and move sideways to squeeze through, and bumping into people or objects was a regular occurrence on smaller walkways. Even the chair he was sitting in creaked loudly under his weight. It was a situation that couldn’t be helped, but in his head, being a burden to others was something he couldn’t bear to happen.
His disappearing act a failure, Kane stood back up, fidgeting up a storm before the looks of his co-workers. Burning up with embarrassment, the boar’s worries only worsened with each second. Frantic thoughts swam through his head, mentally kicking himself for his blunder.
‘They’re probably annoyed with me now…’
‘Everything was going fine before!’
‘This is all my fault…’
‘Why do I always have to be so hungry!?’
‘I have to make this right.’
“I-I’m so sorry!” He sputtered out, bowing for forgiveness.
*guuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr* As if mocking him, Kane’s stomach chose the perfect time to interject once more. Kane winced at the sound, clutching his belly as his blush deepened. he could only imagine what they could be thinking about him right now. The contempt, the disdain, the scorn…
The boar was so wrapped up in his own head that he was blind to what was really going on.If Kane were actually able to hear the minds of his co-workers, the panicked boar’s awkward display elicited something quite different. A single, unanimous thought almost audibly shared by everyone in the building:
It wasn’t any kind of callous remark that Kane was convinced they had. It was really quite the opposite. With the boar’s clumsy apology, all the supposed tension in the room melted away, leaving nothing but a warmth in their hearts similar to that of Kane’s flushed cheeks. The office’s stuffy atmosphere was broken, and from it the room appeared to brighten with new activity. Work resumed like normal, but it came in a more relaxed tone than before. Idle chatter amongst co-workers joined in with the corporate cacophony, making for a much more lively scene. Most importantly for Kane, it meant there were no longer any eyes on him. The boar breathed a sigh of relief. Sinking back into his chair.
“You okay there, big guy?”
“EEP!” Kane nearly shot out of his seat again as he felt a poke in his side. He looked down to see a small, cream-colored ferret next to him, seemingly unfazed by his reaction. “O-Oh, it’s just you, Van. Sorry about that.”
“You sure you’re alright?” Van repeated. “Sounds like you haven’t been eating lately.”
“I-I’m fine, really!” Kane replied hastily. He didn’t want to make a big deal about it, but his stomach betrayed him again with another inopportune growl. “…J-Just need to make it through to lunch is all.” He said, blush returning.
The ferret could only smile. “Riiight. Well, in case you can’t make it, here.” Van pulled out a granola bar from his pocket and placed it on the desk.
“Oh no, I can’t take this!” Kane started. “ I couldn’t possibly trouble you for-“
“It’s no trouble at all!” Van interrupted. “I packed too much food today anyway. What matters is that you’re hungry, right? So just take it, please.”
Kane gave in. He couldn’t argue with that, and his stomach certainly wouldn’t let him. “Thank you, Van.” He said, smiling.
“You’re welcome. That’s what friends are for!”
Contrary to his incessant worries, Kane’s co-workers have been nothing but kind since the day he joined the firm. In fact, he’s indisputably the favorite amongst his peers. Employees of his size were a rarity, and it gave him a natural allure to the smaller furs in the building. Unbeknownst to him, just about everyone was an avid fan of the big guy, Van included.
And like Van, they were all plainly aware of the boar’s feelings. Though he never voiced them out loud, it was easy to see Kane liked his bulk almost as much as they did. Because of this, it was rather common for many of his fans to dote on the big guy with treats, giving his desires a little nudge in the process.
Out of concern for Kane’s missed meal, that nudge was about to become a push.
Van walked back to his desk, exchanging a knowing look with a brown rabbit as he passed by.After a short pause, she got up from her own desk to approach the boar, who was already helping himself to his newly acquired snack.
“Hey there Kane!” She greeted.
“Ohh, uhmm…” He swallowed a mouthful of granola. “Anything I can help you with, Mel?”
Mel shook her head. “No, but maybe I can help you instead.” She said, placing a candy bar on the desk.
“T-That’s kind of you, Mel, but you didn’t-“
“Don’t worry about it! I bought this brand by accident, so I can’t eat it. I figured you would need it more so…”
Again, Kane couldn’t bring himself to refuse. “I’ll take it. Thanks, Mel.”
“Glad I could help!” she replied.
Kane smiled as she left. What great friends he had! Surely this should be enough to tide him over until lunch…
But before he could continue his snack, a blue raccoon suddenly appeared where the rabbit had been just a few seconds ago. “Hey Kane! Thought you could use a little snack after what happened." He said, dropping a small bag of chips on his desk.
“I uh, appreciate that, Barry, but I-“ Kane began.
“No thanks are necessary, bud. Just helping a friend in need!” With that, Barry had scurried off before he could say another word. Kane could only briefly dwell on what just happened when a new co-worker had taken his place, this time a hedgehog. “Hey there, big guy! I did a little baking today, so this little treat is for you!” She said, placing a cupcake on his desk.
“W-Why thank you, Pine, but-“ Once again, Kane had no time to argue as she was already gone. More of his co-workers followed suit in quick succession.
“Hey Kane, I snuck a donut out of the break room for you!”
“Anise, you really shouldn’t have-“
“Got some leftovers from a party last night that I think you’d love!”
“Er, That’s kind, Raz, but-“
“Present for you big guy. Hang in there!”
“U-Um, thanks, Poppy…”
Again and again, his peers came with more and more food. With each person that came by,Kane had no room to refuse. He only had enough time to thank them between bites before the next one came. Candy bars, chips, snacks, pastries and more piled up onto his desk, each contributed by everyone in his department. Even his own boss managed to sneak a couple of cake slices into the mix! By the time they had finished, it looked as if the boar had plundered the break room of all its caloric riches. The gluttonous hoard he had inadvertently amassed by now could last him more than just through lunch, but at least a day or two afterwards.
Kane was utterly at a loss for words at just how much his co-workers had given to him. What kindness! Such generosity! Is this what it’s like for a business to be like a family? They would go this far just to help one person? Knowing that he had such reliable people to work with made the boar’s heart flutter. He hoped he could be even half as helpful as them one day…
A short *ping* from Kane’s computer snapped him out of his reverie. It was 2:00. Lunch time already!? Between today’s excitement and his constant snacking, the time simply got away from him. New thoughts of food drifted into his mind as he contemplated what he was going to eat today. His stomach, though sated, began to rumble anew at the prospect. The snacks were one thing (and there was still plenty left), but nothing really compares to a full meal. That said, he also wouldn’t want to let his friends’ gifts go to waste. He’ll find some time to eat it all later…eventually. For now, he’s got a lunch break to get to! ‘Maybe if I’m lucky, there will be a pizza or two in the fridge like last time…’ he thought.
Kane briefly struggled to heave himself out of his chair with a bit more difficulty than usual. Though it was for a short while, the results of his snacking were already taking their toll on his waistline. With food on the mind, his growing and soon-to-be even larger weight was ignored at the moment. Something for future him to worry (and/or celebrate, usually both) over later. As Kane lumbered his way to the break room, chatter amongst his fan club picked up again out of earshot.
“Well, I’d say that was a success!”
“No way we’d let the big guy go hungry like that.”
“And he’ll have lots to gorge on in the break room, too!”
“I hope he likes what I baked for him…”
“Think he’ll manage to eat everything again?”
“Even with how much we brought this time, I have no doubt.”
“Either way, it seems our big boar will be leaving his shift a bit bigger than before.”
The office of enablers gave a collective sigh of contentment at the notion. Things were never boring with Kane around, and though he was largely oblivious to their motives, they were more than happy to help him when needed.
For one thing, they all made sure that Kane wouldn’t skip out on any meals In the future.
