Conbook cover orcaowl and I did for this past further_confusion !
The theme was “pixelated”, with a focus on retro gaming. I didn’t actually know a ton about retro games, so I watched a 6 hour documentary to prepare (thank you Neverknowsbest on youtube!). We knew we wanted to do something both recognizable and also a deep cut for fans of older games. The con book cover is an homage to Nintendo power, and I had a lot of fun looking through the internet archive for inspiration! We chose to riff off of Metroid because we needed to incorporate the convention’s dragon and cat mascots, and it seemed like a good match. The back cover features the third mascot, a wolf, and is pretty much a direct copy of one of the old back cover ads, and will be posted right after this! We hadn't really done pixel art before, so although it was intimidating I actually had quite a bit of fun!

Thank you Tahu! And that is a great question, I actually really wanted to do something more like the traditional covers, but the art direction for the convention was that there should be as much pixel art as possible in as many places as possible. I was going to try and do both, have the traditional illustration/3D render version as an art show piece, but simply did not have the time haha. But I feel you, I think it would’ve been really cool to do it that way!
Aww damn! Would have *loved* to see how this would have turned out as a more traditional piece. While I don't agree with convention's direction, I can understand wanting to have a medium that is instantly recognizable as "video game" themed. Personally, the seal logo and font is so spot on it was instantly recognizable to me, along with the iconic metroid boxart feel, and would have been stellar as a traditional piece in that vein.
