Project Star Seed: the Fungal Spiders
Aside from mosses and grasses, the Planet Anu is host to a vast variety of mushrooms, some of which reach massive sizes (at least compared to Earth mushrooms). These too are home to different spider species:
The Shroom Spood is a species of spider that has adapted to feeding on the juices of the fungi it lives on. Similar to herds of cattle on grassy planes, groups of these tiny arachnids travel across mushroom caps and occasionally bite down on them in order to feed. They are docile little critters which also possess the ability to carry spores on their abdomens. Some of the spores sprout on the spiders and seem to... enter a sort of symbiotic relationship with them. The exact nature of this relation is still a mystery and will require further research. What is clear, however, is that the Shroom Spoods seem to differ in appearance depending on the type of mushroom they inhabit; likely an early stage of further speciation.
The Shroom Stalker, on the other hand, is a predatory spider species and the natural enemy of the Shroom Spood. It uses its nimble movements to quickly pounce and incapacitate an unwary Shroom Spood and drain it of its fluids. While not 100% confirmed, it is theorized that this species also shows visual differences depending on the species of mushroom it inhabits.
There is still much research to be done as Anu hides many spider-related mysteries.
