Quite possibly. It's always a trade-off... I typically go for a more narrow depth of field simply because I like the visual effect. Too little blur starts to look like a flat vacation snap, in my eyes anyway. That said, in this case I did end up sacrificing some of that nifty wood grain.
Agreed. Most of the time I've got enough breathing room to make that call and set up the shot the way I think it'll look best, but in some cases (like this one, where I only had a short window of opportunity before the lizard skittered away) I just have to move quick and hope for the best... no time to swap lenses or mess with the aperture. :P
