When I was out in the fields the other day I ran across a crane. Couldn't get close enough for a good shot, but when the pups rousted it and it took a calm little flight away from them I managed to grab a series of pics at full zoom with the burst mode on. Three frames a second! So, today I tossed them all together to show what part of the flight I caught. Neat! Too bad about the quality but that goes downhill at full digital zoom (x14).

I agree. IMO, digital zoom is a complete waste of time and effort, since it can be done post. I usually disable it. That's also why I think the argument against having a camera with lots of megapixels is a waste of air. It can always be resized, and images that are cropped end up looking a lot better.

It depends. Under the right conditions you can get nice crisp images, it was probably the fact that I was panning the camera quickly that degraded the quality so much. Here's a shot I got earlier under different conditions.

Both this and the crane picture are shown 1:1 with no re-sizing, cropping only.
