Just before the hunting event is meant to finish, the animal ghosts leave the hunter's bodies they are possessing, leaving altered memories that the hunters had successfully hunted and eaten an animal.
History:- For many generations, the Burnsville family was an avid hunting family who spent enormous sums of money to ship exotic animals to woods on the Burnsville estate to hunt and kill them. Among those animals were a couple of species that were brought to extinction due to Burnsville's desire to hunt.
With governments restricting and limiting people's abilities to hunt animals, the Burnsville estate became a haven for hunters. The Burnsville family had found legal loopholes to exclude their land from hunting laws or bribed anyone who could stop them from hunting.
The land the Burnsville family hunted in was a forest with no distinct pathways through it, and most people who went into the woods would get lost and find themselves walking around in circles. The only ones who could navigate the forest were the Burnsville family and their servants. The complexity of the forest's navigation ensured that only people the Burnsville family brought into the forest could get to the family's hunting lodge while keeping protestors and journalists out.
Deep in the forest was the Burnsville family's giant hunting lodge filled to the brim with the Burnsville hunting trophies and banquet hall where anything had been killed during a hunt.
The large amount of death that was caused in and around the lodge caused the spirits of the dead animals to rise.
The ghosts had two options when they returned to the realms of the living. The first was to haunt the lodge and make it unusable, but the animals were smart enough to realise that the Burnsville family would create a new lodge to hunt from. The second option was to possess those who went to the hunting lodge and prevent them from hunting animals.
The animal spirits decided to take the second choice, possess the hunters, and prevent them from hunting. The ghosts found themselves bound to the hunting lodge, so they had to keep the hunters they were controlling in the lodge. At first, they made the humans they were controlling to drink too much alcohol, so the hunting event was a complete blur, but as time passed, the animals realised they could do much more.
After possessing multiple people, the ghosts realised they could manipulate the memories of the ones they possessed, so instead of drinking lots of alcohol, they made the people they were controlling stand in a form of stasis until the hunting events were to end.
With more practice, the ghosts developed the skill to transform the people they possessed into anthropomorphic animals and that allowed the animal ghosts to have their own parties in the human bodies.
Just as the animal ghosts had planned, the Burnsville family and their associates were none the wiser to the mental manipulation they were afflicted with. When the animals possessed them, they believed they were on epic hunts, pulling off unbelievable tricks when hunting their prey.
These false memories made the Burnsville family incredibly cocky, causing them to think they could get away with anything, which is why one of the younger family members ordered illegal weapons for the family's next hunt. Unbeknownst to the Burnsville family members, the guns they had ordered were being tracked by the government, which led law enforcement right to the lodge's front door.
Before any shootout could occur, the animal ghosts possessed the Burnsville family and anyone else in the lodge at the time, leading them outside and forcing them to surrender.
