Hyenas branched out from Carnivora before the split of caniforma and felioforma. They're slightly closer to felioforma, but their closest relatives are civets and mongooses. Civets, and especially mongooses seem very similar to weasels and the like, but are actually on the caniform side while mongooeses are on the feliform side.
Pylogeny is fascinating that way.
But yeah, people get confused by the 'wolf' part.
