Since the beginning of the Cosmos, or at least as far as anyone could remember at the time, the Primordial Gods had reigned unchecked. They embodied extremes that ranged from forces of nature, time, and space to the basest urges and sensations of mortal life.
Then, the Cosmos itself replied with the Vaendrakhei. The First Vaendrakh was formed from its very fabric and rose up as the first to challenge the Primordial Gods successfully. In contrast to their extremes, the First Vaendrakh represented temperance and balance in life and the Cosmos. Soon, other Vaendrakhei would emerge, one by one, and join to curtail the undue and excessive influence of the Primordial Gods.
Originally, they were hailed as heroes and protectors. They refused worship, which at the time many found made them all the more admirable. Despite all their power, however, they were very cautious in their efforts to preserve the natural order. They were very aware how their presence could affect the Cosmos in a massive way, so every action was measured and careful. This tendency to avoid intervention unless they felt it was absolutely necessary would wear on their reputation as "protectors." Over time, some would wonder if they ever cared at all.
This would not trouble them. They were content to share the knowledge of the Cosmos with those who sought it. Great schools formed around them. While the Primordial Gods would try now and then to stir up trouble, they were able to keep them subdued easily. The great spectacles of when they first arrived were no more. Some misused the knowledge they gained, but the Vaendrakhei put their faith in the strength of those who used it wisely. New gods rose, and the Vaendrakhei rarely acted against them. The truth was that they rarely saw a reason to do so, but some would see this as isolation and their feelings would be further hardened.
As with many stories, the passing of ages would lead to a cruel fate. When the Tyrant rose, the Vaendrakhei knew. When the Primordial Gods were being wholly and truly slain, the Vaendrakhei knew it was by the Tyrant's hand. All of them, from the First Vaendrakh to the Last, would lay down their lives to halt his conquest. Many would never know what happened in the final battle between the Last Vaendrakh and the Tyrant. The cheers and admiration that came from first subduing the Primordial Gods would not come this time but, if they were asked, none of the Vaendrakhei – from the First to the Last – would mind it. They protected the Cosmos from a terrible fate.
This is the lost and forgotten legacy of the First Vaendrakh, who would ask for nothing more.
