This one goes out to all you lion-folk out there!
Kimba was an aged lion when I first met him. He'd not had a good life. The organization I worked with was his forth home, so he'd been around a bit, and he'd been through quite a bit of stuff, even to the point of what I'd consider abuse. I don't want to upset anyone, so I won't go into details. Kimba is just one more example of why I don't do "rescue" work; I'd end up killing someone.
So this is about the best pic I have of the noble Kimba, as horrible as it is with cage everywhere and bad lighting. I only have 6 pix of him. It's another of those sad stories of thinking that I might have more time to get others. Once again, I was wrong, as Kimba got sick while being boarded, and he passed away in July of 2000. He was 15-y-o.
Kimba was DNA typed to be of the Barbary blood-lines, and while he didn't like people - can't blame him there, after they way he'd been treated by most humans - and snarled quite a lot, he was still a very noble beast, and I think a great example of his kind.
This picture, and my posting it here on FA for others to enjoy and reflect upon, is my tribute to him.
This picture was taken somewhere around 25-Apr-00. It was taken with an old Kodak, consumer-grade digital camera (aka junk). I can't rattle of the specs, as this camera didn't record any of that info.
Disclaimer: I hate to have to put this on here, but the pic is copyright me. Please do not distribute, copy, alter, etc, without my permission. Having said all that, feel free to download and use it for your own inspiration.

Sadly, many people view animals - even exotic and majestic ones - as nothing more than "property". Even today, most states have very vague laws that do very little to define what "abuse" actually is with animals. Usually, it has to be something so completely hideous that it makes a jury wretch. It's why I can't do rescue work. People are just horrible.
Uh...sorry. Went off on a tangent there...

Supposedly, there's some remarkably good lines, all in captivity, of course.
The biggest problem is, without a mane, it's really hard to tell what females are part of the blood-lines, and unfortunately, very little DNA-typing has been done on females. While cost-prohibitive, I think that the DNA-typing should include the females as well, as then some sub-species preservation could be done. As it is, with only male-testing, it's a rather one-sided equation.
I agree: he was old, but still very handsome.

Me too. I like your phrasing "take ownership". People ask me all the time if I "own" Drifter and Macumba. "Nope," I always say. "It's the other way around."
I don't think a noble beast could ever be owned by anyone, especially a pesky hyoomon. There is only the illusion of ownership through captivity and possession.
Sorry. Let me get off my soap box now.

Oh yeah. Kimba was quite the lion. He was very snarly, but he had his moments of peace and tranquility.
Having seen lions in the wild (a long time ago) I've always though of Kimba as a "wild" lion, trapped in a cage. He had the same mentality and nobility, I think. Now, i guess I can say, he is truly free of mankind's captivity.

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of info about them. You'll probably find a lot more info on the web than in books.
There's books on African lions, the Timbavati (white) lions, and the Asiatic lions, but nothing (that i know of) about the Barbary lions.
To give you more to go on, the Barbary lions are thought to have been the lions of the ancient times, as in "Biblical" times; so when you read about the lions of ancient Rome and the time when Christ was on earth (according to Biblical teachings), they're belived to have been the Barbary Lions.
Anyway, nuff babble from me. I'll see if I can find any good books for you.

PS If you want a good book to read about African lions, "The Art of Being a Lion"; it's pretty good, and you can get it on Amazon.com

(Shasta grins) I have about four (or maybe five) lion books. Admittedly, I don't know much about lions. I've really studied them because I am quite fascinated with Smiledon, which were also "pride" oriented, at least from what we know. I've never actually spoken with a Smiledon, so I can't confirm that, but based on the research I've been able to do, the theory seems sound.
Anyway, what i was meaning to say before I went off on a tangent, I'll send you my lion book list, as you might find it fascinating.
Oh, you mentioned a tiger... Her name is "Tanarya", by the way, pronounced just like it's spelled, just in case you were curious. She's a Sumatran; dark orange fur and thick black stripes; quite feisty too. :)

It's hard to see in this pic, but his nose is very "scuffed" and he had many scars on his face from various...er...things in his past years. He also walked with a very pronounced limp in his right foreleg, but I won't go into details on how that came about. Let's just say, humans can be stupid, and caused him that pain and limp.
But he was still a cat with both pride and dignity. It was an know to know him, even though he snarled at me most of the time. :)

Thanx.
I really try not to think about now much cruelty a lot of these animals have endured. I think that's why I try so hard to take good care of my animals. It's the least I can do, for beings that are so very important to me. :)
Whereever Kimba is now, I know that he is in a much better place, and I think that there, he's happy and content.
