Thank you. I know Pepe is pretty creepy at times, but trust me, drawing two animal characters (with muzzles) embracing and kissing is VERY difficult--at least, I think so. The longer snouts push the heads back, so you can't get a really good embrace, and they don't really have "lips" to kiss with, which is why I figure they'd do a lot more licking and nuzzling, like dogs do. And trying to make them open-mouth kiss is like trying to fit two pairs of scissors together and try to give it some three-dimensionality.
It's REALLY difficult!

100% Agreed. Do you have any idea how many years I spent trying to get these two to kiss?

Pretty much.

Technically, they have been married since they were betrothed as children. As Fred put it to Horn, "I'm a married man--I just haven't met the wife yet."
But since there was some question about who Songween's Heir was actually going to be, the Contract stated Fred had to remain a virgin until he was safely married to the Heir, to avoid any mistakes.
Songween's declaration named "the youngest granddaughter of my bloodline" as her Heir. Which meant Kathy was designated her Heir when Fred went to introduce himself to the Grrsn clan. Provided, of course, there were no disqualifying reasons why she could not accept the position--like, say, she wasn't a virgin herself.
Songween wanted them to get married that night, in New Yak, so they could travel as a couple and no one could object to their union (because hyena weddings are permanent.) She reminded Fred that Fisi and Penny were willing to perform the ceremony. But Fred wasn't sure, and Kathy was definitely hostile toward the idea of marrying a total stranger, so the wedding ceremony never took place.
They were in a state of legal limbo then. Fred couldn't touch her without violating the Contract because they were not legally married according to Crocutan law and custom--and for a while, he wasn't so sure he wanted to marry her, either. Fortunately, they grew on each other over the course of the safari.
Songween offered several times to perform the marriage ceremony, but Fred was set on having it done properly, with the big, official wedding, not a quickie job "in Vegas" so to say just for the sake of being able to have sex. And objecting to Songween is one of the few ways he could exercise power over her. She couldn't force them to wed, because the law stipulates they have to be "willing and sober." So Songween had to wait for him to feel ready to commit to Kathy, and for Kathy to be ready to commit to being Heir of Rackenroon.
But Songween has another reason for haste. She is 95 and, while being in reasonably good health, thanks to Trader Horn's elixirs, she wants to see the succession ensured before she dies. And she wants to be the one who marries them, and passes on her mantle to them.
