the Pookas: Chip, Dale, and Euglena by Lou Frank
In almost every tabletop RPG I have ever run, in every game system, these three characters have shown up when things are getting a bit too dark. Only once did I not use them in time to stop a game from spiraling into complete darkness. But regardless of whether I'm refereeing Dungeons & Dragons, a super-hero game, or even science-fiction, these three time-traveling pookas always can find an excuse to show up.
The eldest is Chip; he's the swashbuckler of the brothers. Dale loved the American Old West and dresses (and acts) accordingly as a gallant gun-slinger. Euglena drives a trans-dimensional Trans-Am and is fond of beer. He's the youngest of the three.
They, like all pookas, only ever seem to show up to one person at a time and -usually- when they're drunk, disoriented, or otherwise unable to corroborate the sighting. They manipulate probability like putty and love adventure.
The only odd thing about them is that they're unsure whether or not they're the same individual but at different times in a long, long life that they've lost track of. Hard to say. Even I don't know.
