Hasse walks slowly through the forest and there are many feelings and thoughts swirling around in his head. He is quite sure that it is a good decision to kill the dragon queen since she will give birth every day and the baby dragons themselves will also give birth when they become adults after about five days. But at the same time, the dragon queen seemed so proud to give birth to the baby dragons, and Hasse can kind of understand how she feels. For that reason, he feels that it is difficult to kill her right now.
Hasse is right that the dragon queen is proud and while Hasse walks in the forest, the dragon queen looks lovingly at the newborn dragon cubs. The dragon queen is also very happy because all the baby dragons were born without any defects. She remembers the last hatchings so well but this time, all the baby dragons are healthy. They are larger than the baby dragons that were hatched and they are also more lively than the last baby dragons that have hatched in the cave. The only thing that worries the dragon queen is the lack of food.
The dragon queen goes to the pantry and tries to find something to eat. There's a cow at the bottom and it actually looks appetizing and the dragon queen pulls it towards her and checks carefully that its belly doesn't bubble or smell bad from the cow and it's as it should be and can be eaten. The dragon queen opens the cow's belly and begins to eat the meat, and it tastes just right.
The dragon queen is hungry after giving birth to the baby dragons and also throwing up food for them and it won't be long until the meat in the cow is eaten. There is a horse near where the cow was and the dragon queen thinks about whether she should eat it too but lets not. She can eat the horse later.
The dragon queen is just about to go over to the newborn baby dragons when she sees something white hanging on the wall a bit above all the meat and she wonders what it is. The dragon queen is pretty sure she hasn't seen this thing before and she sniffs it carefully. The dragon queen can smell Hasse's scent on the thing and she immediately recognizes the scent. She wonders why he put it there and she touches the white thing with her claws but it seems to be stuck to the wall. The dragon queen decides to ignore this thing and walks over to her dragon cubs. They keep playing with each other.
Meanwhile in the forest, Hasse gets closer and closer to where the defense and the military are waiting. They see him coming without the bombs. The task leader who drove Hasse to the forest walks up to him.
- Did it go well? Are the bombs placed in the cave?
- I have placed them in different places in the cave. My God, she was just going into labor when I got there. I never thought I would see something like that up close and at first I was actually a little disgusted to see it.
- So it was exactly as we suspected that the DNA had been activated.
- It certainly seems so. She gave birth to most of the baby dragons at a tremendous speed.
- Do you know how many baby dragons she gave birth to?
- There seemed to be 35 baby dragons in total but I may have missed someone.
The task leader who drove Hasse notices that Hasse's sandals and also feet are wet and muddy. He looks questioningly at the wet sandals and feet. Hasse smiles a little.
- That's amniotic fluid from some amniotic sacs.
- So you were so close when she gave birth?
Hasse laughs lightly.
- She basically had her anus pointed at me most of the birth and several amniotic sacs landed on my feet so I was very close. The amniotic sacs were actually quite heavy.
- She didn't get nervous when you were so close when she gave birth?
- She didn't seem the least bit nervous. Rather the opposite. It was as if she wanted to show me how good she was at giving birth.
- Hmm. After all, you have met her several times.
Hasse realizes that he was filming when the dragon queen gave birth to some dragon babies and he takes out his mobile phone
- Do you want to see when she gives birth? I filmed her giving birth to some baby dragons.
- Eh, what?
- Did you want to see when she gave birth to some baby dragons?
The task leader shrugs his shoulders slightly.
- Sure okay. Did you film everyone who was born?
- No, just some of them.
Hasse plays the first clip when the dragon queen gives birth to the baby blue-white dragon. The mission leader looks disgusted when the liquid squirts into the amniotic sac but seems to think the baby dragon is a little cute when it gets out of the amniotic sac. Hasse also shows when she gives birth to the golden dragon baby and the brown one with white dots all over. The task leader can't help but smile when Hasse calls the brown dragon cub Bambi in the film clip. It is very similar to Bambi
The task leader thinks that he himself had not been so close when the dragon queen gives birth. But there are more important things than the fact that Hasse has filmed when the dragon queen gives birth and is wet from the amniotic fluid. The task leader who drove Hasse looks into Hasse's eyes.
- Was it difficult to place the bombs? Did she suspect something?
- It was no problem to place them. She was so calm and nice to me the whole time. The hardest part was probably that she sent a strong feeling of missing before she started giving birth to baby dragons. It is obvious that she misses her male very much. I felt sorry for her. I don't think she suspects anything because I was so calm and nice to her.
- Would it be a pity about the dragon queen? Now you might as well give up. She is not a domesticated animal but is very dangerous.
- I saw both the female and the male hatch and we have always had an emotional connection to each other. It's not easy to explain, but that's how it is. I've been to the cave twice before and she trusted me each time even though she had dragon cubs. When she gave birth, several amniotic sacs with baby dragons landed right on my feet and she didn't react to it.
- It sounds a bit like you are friends.
- It's not that simple. I'm a dragon whisperer. Do you know what that is?
The task leader looks at Hasse for a long moment before answering.
- I know what it is. So you have warned her.
- No, I have not done that. It still hadn't helped her.
- So everything is ready for blowing up the cave and dropping the fire bombs?
- Absolutely.
- So the dragon queen won't be flying here in a little while?
- She didn't suspect anything and even if she did, she can't leave the cave.
- Why?
- Because she is just a dragon queen and they never leave their nest. That was already the case in 1909 when Sven killed a dragon queen. I know what I'm talking about.
- Okay. Then we set off.
- Shouldn't we wait here when the cave blows up?
- We will drop the fire bombs right after the cave is blown up and then we shouldn't be here.
- For the dragon queen's sake?
- For our sake, of course. It will burn heavily and then we don't want to be here. There will be a big forest fire.
- Can you do that? This forest is ancient.
- For the country's security, we have to do this.
- I understand.
Hasse gets into the same car in which he was picked up and the cars drive towards the shopping center in the center of Åby. When they arrive, three people from the military press two buttons on a joystick-like thing.
Meanwhile in the cave, the dragon queen stands with the dragon cubs approximately where she stood when she gave birth to the dragon cubs. One of the baby dragons jumps up towards the wall that the dragon queen had her head against when she gave birth, and when she looks a little higher, she sees two similar things sitting away by the food. The dragon queen is absolutely certain that the two things weren't on the wall when she was giving birth and she wonders what they are. Could they have something to do with the male?
The bombs that Hasse placed in the cave explode and the dragon queen gets a lot of the cave right on top of her and she tumbles to the ground. Both the wall in front and behind her have completely collapsed. The dragon queen has hard scales on most of her body and is not hurt but more surprised. Her anus hurts a bit as part of the wall behind her landed there. The dragon queen soon gets up and shakes herself.
The entire wall on either side of her has disappeared and the dragon queen can see the forest ahead and above her. The baby dragons are crawling around the collapsed cave, calling for their mother. They are scared. She calls back and they find her after a few seconds.
Just 15 seconds after the cave is blown up, three large fire bombs are released from an airplane flying high above the cave. The fire bombs search for living material. After a while they fly down towards the cave and approach the dragon queen at high speed. She doesn't have time to escape. She doesn't know what's coming above her but she knows it won't end well.
The fire bombs hit the dragon queen on both the front body and the back body. At first it doesn't feel much when they penetrate the skin but after a few seconds they detonate and then it really doesn't feel good. It almost feels like the dragon queen's insides are being ripped apart all over. The dragon queen begins to burn heavily. The third fire bomb hits the nearest baby dragon. It runs towards the other baby dragons in wild panic. When it detonates, all the baby dragons start burning.
The dragon queen roars and screams in pain and agony as she continues to burn fiercely. The newborns and the slightly older baby dragons also scream all the time from the pain. Finally, both the dragon queen and the baby dragons fall silent. The dragon queen tries to stay alive but she finally can't take it anymore and her world becomes pitch white and silent. But just for a brief moment because soon she wakes up in a large wheat field and she hears someone calling her. She recognizes that voice.
Just as Hasse promised, the dragon queen meets her male in heaven and they run around and play with each other like when they were newly hatched and young. None of them feel any sadness. They are a couple again and that is most important to them.
The dragon queen also meets her newborn dragon cubs as well as other dragons who have also died and they are all together as a big giant flock. All the dragons fly around as they please and there is plenty of food for them too.
There is a strong smell of burnt flesh as the flames reach the inner flesh of the dragon queen and dragon cubs. The thick fat from the dragon's flesh explosively increases the height of the flames. Soon the flames are over 15 meters high. The now enormous flames rise high from the cave, igniting all nearby combustible material in no time.
The fire spreads quickly through the forest and soon the whole forest is in flames. There will be a very large forest fire and the entire old forest in Åby will burn up very violently and quickly. Thousands of years of forest history are being burned down by the fierce flames. There are many naturalists who believe that the defense is doing it the wrong way but it is explained in the news that this is the surest way to kill all the dragons. They could have contented themselves with bombing the cave itself, but the risk would have been great that the dragon queen could have managed to escape and continue to reproduce. You dare not take any risks.
When the fire reached the edge of the forest, it began to be extinguished by water bombing from the airplanes. In the end, it just smokes from the forest. The defense and the military return together with Hasse.
They go to the collapsed cave to see if the dragon queen is dead. They find her large sooty skeleton right away and it is close together with many smaller skeletons. Hasse thinks that she must have protected her dragon cubs into death. The dragon queen and her offspring are dead and everyone involved can exhale. Hasse looks at the task leader who drove him.
- What will happen now?
- We will pick up the skeletons when they have cooled down and grind them into flour and it will be spread on the tip where the other dragons were burned.
- Wouldn't it be fun if the dragon queen's body was transported to some museum and put on display? Kind of like a dinosaur. Of course they would have to wash the soot off first.
- I don't think anyone wants to be reminded of the progress of the dragons, so it's not a good idea.
Hasse thinks about it and feels that it feels reasonable. No one wants to be reminded of what has happened and many are probably still traumatized by the events. Hasse doesn't dare ask if he can have the dragon queen's skull as some kind of memory. The defense will probably say no and when he thinks about it, he realizes that it would be an absurd idea to save it. Where would he even have it? Madelene certainly wouldn't have approved of it being in the apartment.
Hasse looks at the task leader from Åby, who has been angry with him all along, and Hasse feels that he wants them to be nice to each other, so he approaches the task leader.
- Excuse me, can you and I talk a little. I don't want us to be enemies anymore even though I may never see you again.
The task leader from Åby nods and he and Hasse step away a little so they can talk in peace.
- What do you want to talk about?
- I wonder if you knew about the events with the dragons in 1909.
- No, I didn't know the events until the task leader from Toltorp told me about it.
- I told about the events to the task leader in Toltorp. I wonder, how did you know the dragons had to die even before something bad happened?
- It is enough to read a fairy tale with a dragon and you know. The dragons are always evil and must be slain.
- I suspected it was about something like that, but you are actually completely wrong. The male that was hatched at my house actually scolded the dragons that spewed fire at Liseberg on Friday. This was the same day he died and it happened before he ate the poisoned meat.
- Was the male in the city that day?
- Yes, he was one of the dragons that crashed and died closest to Liseberg. He was lying outside an apartment building.
- I'll be damned. I thought I recognized that dragon somehow. So it was him.
- The dragon queen who died today hadn't done anything wrong either, but since she had started to give birth and would do so every day as well as every dragon cub she gives birth to, I understood that she had to die. Both animals were very special and unfortunately new species of animals are killed every day for various reasons and it feels very wrong.
- I think I understand what you mean but no one will want live dragons around. They pose too great a risk to humans.
- With hindsight of what has happened I can probably agree but I feel things would have been different if the dragon queens hadn't multiplied as fast as they did and the dragons hadn't sprayed fire on all the villas.
- It is quite possible that you are right about that. But when you found out that the dragons burned down villas in Åby and Mölndal, you would have immediately called us.
- I am aware of that and I am terribly sorry that it did not turn out that way.
The task leader nods and Hasse and he shake hands. They are no longer enemies. Hasse picks up his cell phone
- By the way, do you want to see when the dragon queen gave birth to some of the baby dragons? I filmed a bit when she gave birth to some of them.
- Okay, it can be looked at, but you, don't show this to any reporter. We don't want the public to know this about their breeding.
- Obviously not. This is filmed for private use. Maybe I'll show it to my girl. She won't show it to any reporter.
- Oh okay. You can start the movie clip.
Hasse starts the first clip where the dragon queen gives birth to the baby blue-white dragon. During the course of the clip, the task leader's face changes from cool interest to disgust and finally to a certain softness. Hasse then shows the clip when the brown dragon cub is born. The task leader can't help but laugh when Hasse calls the baby dragon Bambi. Finally, Hasse shows when the golden dragon cub is born. The task leader looks at Hasse in a completely new way after watching the films. He feels that Hasse seems to be a very kind and nice person who cares a lot about animals.
- You were very close when she gave birth. You were never nervous that she would get mad at you?
- She wanted me to stand close. When I went further away, she stopped giving birth and looked at me.
- Very strange. Animals don't usually react like that.
- I'm a dragon whisperer and I had asked her to turn around so I could see her giving birth closer. Her anus was always directed at me. But the reason I asked her to turn around was so I could set up the bombs. She was facing me before and then I couldn't set up the bombs.
- Okay, then I understand. So you managed to trick her. Good thinking.
- I guessed that she would be suspicious if she saw me setting up the bombs.
- You are probably quite right in that suspicion. Yes, thank you very much for helping us. Your help was invaluable.
- No problem buddy.
Hasse walks over to the task leader who drove him here. Hasse feels that he cannot do much here and wants to go home and start packing for the trip.
- Is it okay if you drive me home again?
- Yes of course. I was just waiting for you when you talked to the task leader from Åby.
- He from Åby and I are no longer enemies.
- So nice. He was a little mad at you before.
Hasse gets into the car and the task leader drives him to the city. The task leader parks outside the apartment building where Hasse lives and before he drops Hasse off, he wants to talk to him.
- Hasse, what we did today and what you saw in the cave is secret. You must not tell anyone about this.
- No problem.
- Both Robert and the task leader from Åby have also decided that you may not comment on the news regarding the dragons. You don't get to tell anyone how it started or anything.
- Why?
- I don't actually know, but what I do know is that they can sue you if you start talking about it in the media. There are big fines for that sort of thing.
- My wife would like to know things, but she will not go to the media.
- Okay, you can tell her if she keeps quiet. Well, I was ordered to tell you this.
- I understand. I hope I was of good help.
- You absolutely were. Take care.
Hasse gets out of the car and goes into the apartment building that he and Madelene live in. It has been a funny day and there are many thoughts running through his head.
When Hasse arrives at the apartment, he is immediately met by Madelene. She looks at him for a long time and frowns when she sees Hasse's wet feet and sandals.
- Did everything go well? Is the dragon queen dead now?
- Everything went perfectly and she and the dragon cubs that were in the cave and the ones she was giving birth to when I was there are also dead. They are burnt and destroyed.
- Wait, what, giving birth? Dragons do lay eggs. She had a lot of eggs when I accompanied you to the cave.
- She had changed and had started giving birth instead after the male had died.
- Had she found a new male?
- No, apparently it happened asexually, but I don't know all the details about it and I don't need to either. But any dragon cubs she gave birth to would be able to give birth themselves when they were old enough.
- But seriously, are you messing with me?
- No. I'm not kidding. I filmed her giving birth to some baby dragons.
Hasse takes out his cell phone and shows the clips he filmed. When she sees the amniotic sac from the baby blue-white dragon open and all the foamy amniotic fluid spills out over Hasse's feet and sandals, she understands why Hasse's feet and sandals are so wet. When the baby brown dragon is born and comes out of its amniotic sac and Hase calls it Bambi, she can't help but laugh. The baby dragon really reminds me of Bambi and it feels so wrong at the same time. When the clips are finished, Hasse and Madelene stand and look at each other. Madelene makes a humming sound.
- So, there will be no more dragons in Gothenburg?
- No, everyone is dead. The dragon queen's skeleton is to be ground into flour and spread on the landfill where the other dragons were burned. The dump will be guarded for many years so that no one can get hold of dragon DNA. Okay, if someone breaks into our apartment and steals the blue mane, they might get dragon DNA, but that risk isn't that great. After all, only the two of us know that it is hung in the living room.
- You're absolutely sure there won't be any more dragons?
- The defense and the military have killed just about every dragon there is. It's over.
Madelene nods to herself.
- Okay, but then we can start to forget what has happened and start looking at the future that lies ahead of us. Can you promise me to do it?
- Absolutely. Is there something you don't want me to do?
- You and I don't need to talk about the dragons anymore and please, delete those videos. They disgust me. Take off your sandals and wash them thoroughly. I don't want amniotic fluid from a baby dragon on my feet if I borrow them. You're going to bring them with you to Mallorca, right?
- I myself thought it was disgusting to see her give birth to the first baby dragons and when an amniotic sac touched my feet I almost started to vomit, but after a while it wasn't as disgusting anymore. I will of course wash the sandals and I intend to take them with me on the trip. They are among my favorite sandals.
- Have you started packing for the trip yet?
- No, but I will when I have washed the sandals. There are two days left before we will travel.
Hasse takes off his wet sandals and goes into the bathroom and washes them with a mild detergent. He also washes his feet carefully and when he is satisfied, he dries them carefully. Hasse puts the sandals above the element so they have time to dry until they travel in two days. Hasse goes to the storage room and gets a large travel bag and then goes to the bedroom and starts to pack what he knows he wants to take with him.
Madelene turns on the kitchen radio and also goes to the bedroom. Her travel bag is more filled with clothes and important stuff than Hasse's bag is. Madelene started packing her suitcase already the previous day.
It's the wish hour that's playing on the radio right now, and Madelene almost gets a little angry when she hears a wish for all good Gothenburgers. The song that is wanted is Jan Malmsjö's; Puff the magic dragon. Hasse also reacts to the song choice.
- That song is about something completely different from the dragons here, but I think it's someone who wants to mess with those who have been affected by the dragons' progress.
- I think so too. Actually, whoever wanted this song should be reported to the police. It's really not okay considering what has happened in the last few days.
The person sitting at the radio station realizes the same thing and after barely a minute the song stops playing and a new song starts instead. The song now being played is Håkan Hellström's; Känn ingen sorg för mig Göteborg, and it feels much better to hear it.
Hasse is quick to pack, but he also knows roughly which clothes he wants to use. It will only be T-Shirts and shorts that will be packed apart from a nice suit. When the clothes are packed, he starts to pack other things such as travel soap and other things.
Hasse thinks about Madelene marrying him and he is already smiling at the fact that it will be so. But then he comes up with a very important thing. They haven't bought any wedding rings yet.
- Madelene, have you bought any wedding rings?
- No that, Oh shit. We both forgot that. How can we forget such an important thing?
- We have had a lot to think about. Well, Guldfynd is open today. It's Monday.
- But then I think we're going there now.
Both Hasse and Madelene leave the apartment and go straight to Guldfynd. They ask for wedding rings and the assistant in the store shows them where they are. Hasse and Madelene discuss what color the rings should be, but it doesn't matter to them and they choose two rings in silver.
A radio is on in the store and the news starts. A reporter tells us that the last dragons in Gothenburg are now dead and that the public can breathe a sigh of relief. The assistant in the store says it's good news. Now the shops can start selling again. Hasse totally agrees.
The assistant writes in the name of the wedding rings and they are very nice. Hasse and Madelene pay for their wedding rings and they go home again. There are significantly more people in the city than there have been since Friday when the dragons attacked.
Hasse and Madelene cook together and it becomes lasagna. When they have finished eating, they put the wedding rings in Hasse's suitcase. Hasse turns off the radio and turns on Spotify instead. Hasse chooses a playlist of relaxing music and he and Madelene dance with each other in the living room.
Meanwhile in the forest near Åby, Robert arrives and he has a large machine with him that will grind the dragons' skeletons into a fine flour. Robert and the task leader from Åby help unload the machine from the trailer. The power is switched on and the machine starts to hum. The first skeletons of the baby dragons are picked up and brought into the machine and soon all that is left of the baby dragons is black and white flour.
It is quick to empty the cave of all skeletons and the skeleton of the dragon queen is the last to be ground through the machine. Now there is nothing left in the cave to show that a pair of dragons have lived here. All the flour is saved in a very large container and it will be spread on the same dump where the other dragons were burned. The machine is loaded onto the trailer again and Robert drives to the dump and spreads the flour. Then he drives to the defense base in Toltorp and begins to write a long report about the dragons.
A team that works to check if caves and the like are safe to enter arrives at Hugo's cave and they check how the cave looks and if it is safe to enter. They believe that there is a very large racial risk in several places, which means that it is not safe for the public. The team puts up warning signs and cordons off the area around the cave.
The team and the task leader from Åby discuss whether some form of surveillance is needed in the area and the task leader first thinks that it might be needed, but he realizes that they don't need to mention the cave to any reporter, so he says that no surveillance is needed here. Only Hasse and the defense and the military know what has happened in this cave.
The task leader from Åby leaves the forest and drives to the defense base in Toltorp and helps Robert write the report on the progress of the dragons. The report contains a lot of text but also pictures of all the dragon pairs that died the previous day. There are also several pictures of the baby dragons in the park by Avenyn. Blood samples were taken on the baby dragons before they were burned and they do not seem to belong to any of the dead dragon pairs and neither the task leader from Åby nor Robert can see who their parents were. It's a bit of a mystery.
