the Commodore was, specifically the VT Commodore, which is the car that this gen of Holden Ute is based on! you can look up the Buick XP2000, that was the original development concept. there's no real confirmation on why it never came out in the US as a Buick, but it's believed that it was to avoid conflicting with the Cadillac Catera and Buick LeSabre.
although, the research and development didn't go entirely to waste, as the Commodore got sold in brazil for that generation as the Chevrolet Omega, retaining the same Buick 3800 and such. here's some pictures of it!!
