Speculative Skull Island Bullshit: Dawn hawk
The dawn hawk is a conspicuous aerial predator with a rather unusual colouration more reminiscient of a flamingo than the drab colouration usually seen in birds of prey. Like in flamingoes, the feathers contain carotene, but rather than gathering it from their food, dawn hawks are capable of synthesizing it themselves, an ability transferred from plants by the chimera virus. It is believed that this trait was established in the species by the colouration being viewed as attractive by the birds while not being detrimental; the dawn hawk's enormous size makes it conspicuous enough and the ability to fly is protection from large predators enough. Rather than normal birds of prey, dawn hawks are capable of flight and leave the nest long before they have reached their adult size. While solitary outside of breeding season, they can form strong bonds with other species on occasion, possibly as it provides them a hunting or defensive advantage; a reported example was bonded to Kong for a prolonged time.
