Long Hike was one of several inspirations, Dwellers were designed as part of a species called Moon dragons, if I were to name a few - there's a bit of slavic folklore in them, Bastion the videogame - as they are musically inclined (this is something that I have yet to show in the comic), Risk of Rain's lemurians and I suppose Pokémon, though they do not evolve, they hatch into either Dweller, Spotter or Twinguard.
And for this one I agree, this page flows so much better because of the caricatures showcasing their mocking tone and clearly expressed frustration on Ayliith's part. I got myself to try out some different poses and angles, and while not all of them work out great, trying them out taught me a lot
