A Guide to the Nightmare Realm (with commentary from MUB!)
Intro
You lie in your bed one night, being awoken from your sleep to the sound of your closet door creaking open slowly. As you sit up in bed, you peer into the darkness of the closet to see a monstrous face looking back at you. Suddenly, you are grabbed and pulled into the closet, and all fades to black as the monster drags you into its Nightmare Realm.
MUB: "I wouldn’t ever drag you to my Nightmare Realm! I mean, unless we’re close friends and you’re used to my games, but I would still be very gentle!"
What is a Nightmare Realm?
A Nightmare Realm is a monster's own personal space that they use to terrorize and torment their prey. Fear makes the prey more appetizing to the monster. The more frightful the prey is, the more delicious the prey seems to taste to the monster, like seasoning. But what does the Nightmare Realm look like? That is entirely up to the monster that owns the realm, as the realm is in truth a space of their own imagination. They get to decide what the Nightmare Realm looks like, how big it is, and how it operates.
MUB: "It is true that the Nightmare Realm’s main purpose is to frighten prey to a high degree. However, I am a little more unique compared to others of my kind in that I simply prefer using my realm for fun and games rather than actually trying to scare anyone! My human friends love coming to play in my realm, and I am quite proud of the types of settings I have come up with for us to play in! I have the Haunted Mansion, the Dark Maze, the Abandoned School, and many others! My favorite though? That would have to be Horrorland. Nick named it, it’s after a children’s horror book, I believe? Don’t worry, my Horrorland isn’t actually that scary! It’s only a mildly spooky Halloween-themed amusement park, and I made all the rides and games fully operational! You can even eat the food! It’s all imaginary, but it will feel real! It’s a nice place for my human friends to just have some fun. However, it also still makes for an amazing setting for my games of hide and seek! Also, if you want an example of exactly how much control I have over the operation of my realm, I can make certain ‘rules’ come into effect while we play. An example is making the area of Horrorland shrink as time goes on to restrict where my friends can run and hide. Think of the ‘storm’ in those battle royale video games!"
MUB: "Oh, and by the way? You’re all amazingly delicious whether you’re scared or not! My belly wanted me to let you guys know that."
If a monster chooses, they can also pull a setting straight from the mind of their prey, making the realm look like a place the prey is familiar with, either in dream or reality.
MUB: "Oh yes! I’ve done that a couple times! I stylized my Abandoned School setting just like the middle school my friend Nick went to, even though I’ve never truly seen it myself! As for settings from actual human dreams, those are a little tougher to pin down and design, so I usually avoid them personally."
One important thing to note about a Nightmare Realm is, once again, it is a place of imagination. So, while things can be touched and felt as if they are real, nothing in the realm can actually do any physical harm to the prey, aside from the monster itself. Even if a spike were to impale the prey within the Nightmare Realm, it would in truth be nothing more than an illusion.
MUB: "Now I would never ever create a situation where someone in my realm would be ‘impaled by a spike’, or anything similar, but it is true that in a Nightmare Realm, the only thing there that can actually hurt you is the monster in charge. And you know me! Both me and my belly are very gentle!"
Figments
Within a Nightmare Realm, the monster can include creatures that either help fill the environment or assist in terrorizing the prey. Monsters tend to call these creatures ‘figments’, and like the rest of the realm they only exist as part of the monster’s (or even the prey’s) imagination. Figments can take on many different forms, such as people, animals, or even other monsters. But no matter what form they take, they are not real and can not actually harm the prey, just like the rest of the realm. They can touch the prey, but not actually inflict harm.
MUB: "I don’t always include figments in my realm, but you may find them in a couple of my settings! Horrorland for sure has a petting zoo with animal figments in it, and many other Horrorland attractions have spooky staff members to help explain rules for games and stuff. I may also occasionally include figments styled after fellow monsters to help me in my hide and seek games."
How to Escape
Within every Nightmare Realm, there is a way for the prey to escape and return to their own world. Even though a monster can choose what their realm looks like and how it works, they have to make an exit that is accessible to the prey somehow. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have to be easily accessible, so many monsters put these exits in harder to reach areas or behind certain roadblocks that the prey has to figure someway around. As long as the prey could reach it in some way however, it is fair game. Fortunately though, there is a way prey can reach these exits easier, and that is simply awareness. Similar to an actual nightmare, if the prey realizes that the realm they are trapped in is not real, they will have an easier time escaping. If the exit is hidden, they will have an easier time finding it. If the exit has roadblocks, they will be able to go through them. Even if a figment is guarding the exit, as long as the prey remains aware, they will be able to escape. If full awareness is achieved, the only thing that will be able to truly stop you from escaping is the real monster that owns the realm.
MUB: "Don’t worry, leaving my Nightmare Realm is not hard to accomplish! I always make my realm’s exit easily noticeable and accessible to all my friends that I bring in. With me, you can always leave my realm if you really want to, whether by going right to the exit or just asking me. But I do encourage you to stick around and play, even for just a little while! I know I like to pretend to be a bad monster sometimes, but if you get too scared, I am happy to dial it down! Oh and by the way, I’m sure all my friends are aware that nothing in my realm is truly real. But if you choose to ignore that fact, everything will certainly feel like it is~"
MUB: "If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below!"
