Presenting a furry fable:
ONCE upon a time near the village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, there lived a hungry wolf named Heinz, and a proud shepherd named Sheepish. Each day Heinz would longingly peer out from his window and observe Sheepish, the burly yet surprisingly agile shepherd as he nimbly directed his flock of sheep up to the alpine meadows to graze.
"Sheepish tends his flock with such loving care. Look how kindly he treats them." Heinz grumbled. "He lavishes attention on them, but do you think he would condescend from off his perch to bother giving this lowly wolf the time of day?" he hissed. "He makes sure to feed them each day but ME he would let go hungry." One day Heinz worked up the courage to initiate a conversation with Sheepish as he passed by with his flock. "You are known as a wise and experienced shepherd." purred Heinz. "Perhaps you could find it in your heart to invite a younger, consenting wolf like me over for dinner..... perhaps...we could have... lamb chops... together.... Heinz drooled as his eyes darted over the firm, muscular flesh of... um... the sheep, yes the sheep that were huddled behind the shepherd. Sheepish wasn't having any of it and snapped back: " I am responsible for these little ones and cannot sacrifice even one for the likes of you! Now go satisfy your hunger elsewhere." Sheepish then waved Heinz aside with his shepherd's crook and continued up with his flock. Heinz turned away and went home with his tail between his legs.
The sting of that brush-off festered in the heart of the hungry wolf, making him more jealous and enraged with each passing hour. Finally Heinz decided to take action. "I will steal one of the shepherd's succulent, tender sheep- but not just any sheep- I will steal the prized ewe of the flock: the one called 'Liebchen!'" Motivated by the prospect of feasting at the shepherd's expense, Heinz grabbed the largest basket he could find and headed up through the forest to the alpine meadow where Sheepish was tending his flock.
As he reached the edge of the forest he could make out the fluffy white forms of the sheep as they grazed in the clearing. But where was the shepherd? Heinz kept hid in the shadows as he cautiously surveyed the field. What was this? The shepherd was nowhere to be seen! He was missing from his perch and so was his shepherd's crook. "One of the sheep must have wandered off and Sheepish went looking for it." Heinz reasoned. "What luck, I have these tasty morsels all to myself- now to find Liebchen before the shepherd comes back and finds ME!! As the wolf circled, the bleating of the increasingly nervous sheep grew louder- no doubt alerting their master to danger. Heinz knew he had to work quickly, but he could not find her. "Where IS she?"
The wolf's initial excitement gave way to disappointment when he realized that the very sheep he was looking for- was also the missing sheep! Frustrated, Heinz grabbed the plumpest sheep he could catch and shoved the struggling beast into his basket. "You... will have to do... as my consolation prize." Heinz grunted as he slung the heavy basket onto his back. He took one last fleeting glance across the clearing as he trotted back into the forest and headed for home. "That was almost TOO easy." Heinz thought. "Hmmm... perhaps I will invite Sheepish to MY feast tonight!" Heinz flashed an evil grin.
Just as his confidence was getting the better of him, Heinz rounded a large beech tree and nearly tripped over the shepherd's crook. Heinz froze as he recognized the shepherd's lederhose draped over it. "What is going on?" Heinz raised his eyes to find himself face to face with a clearly startled shepherd... and Liebchen! "Ach, du lieber Gott im Himmel!"
Um... so... this story could go a couple of different ways from here..... I know! You can use your IMAGINATION and complete the story for yourselves! But to summarize, on this particular day, neither Heinz nor Sheepish had the moral high ground to judge the other's actions. Both were caught with a sheep, but for... ahem... different reasons. The moral is: Be careful what ewe do, because ewe never know who might catch ewe.
Sweet Jesus, what have I done?
