Character
Ray Jackson, or RJ for short, was born in a mixed family. His father was a rabbit like him, but his mother was a Raelon. His parents were staying over in Atlantis at the time of his birth, on the Terran Raelon island, where the magic field makes everyone have phantom limbs. His mother wanted to have her children inherit her Raelon magic heritage, and thus decided to give birth there. RJ was a healthy baby, but soon after birth, they went back to the home country of his father, the United States of America, or to be more precise, back to the outskirts of Yorktown.RJ was never happy about his mom's choice to give him the blessing of having phantom limbs. For him, it has been more of a hindrance than a blessing. As a child, he was often drawing attention to himself for his perculiar state, and often wears clothing with long sleeves that makes his limbs more visible in order to look somewhat more normal. His peers often abused his lack of solid limbs, bullying him by pulling him apart and leaving him virtually helpless. He's also terribly afraid of bodies of water, fearing he might drown if he loses control over his limbs. He's rarely seen without his tethers, a set of ropes that keeps his limbs together.
The rabbit did have an affinity for study, and was particularly attracted by the combination of technology and magic. He loved to mess with electronics, pulling them apart, check how they worked and put them back together. He was delighted to find out that there was a special field of study where magic and technology meet: arcatech. He was supposed to start at university when he was 18, but the sudden worldwide wave of destruction caused by the Wellspring War delayed this for one and a half years. He did some self-study in the meantime, and eventually when he did start his study, he graduated with flying colours.
RJ has been enlisted to the Pioneer in 2045, and has been mentored by Micha Geißler, who later became Kim Geißler-Thandi after a merge by a magic accident. Being on a ship with so many misfits, RJ opened himself up a bit. He could share his creative hobbies more openly with crew members; he has trained to play the violin since he was nine years old, and he's also quite a skillfull woodcrafter, making small wood statues to decorate his quarters (and his colleagues' if they want some). He's quite close to his fellow Raelon Chintaka and her clique of friends, and is still trying to learn how to speak sign language, motivated by Chintaka's friends, and fluent sign-language "speakers" Tom and Nurlan.

So, I had a fun idea of having a Terran non-feline person being affected by Raelon magic, and finding it a handicap rather than it being helpful. I thought a rabbit would be cute for that.

Well, it's complicated, and depends on the context.
You see, when they are in close proximity of the magic field that made them this way (such as their island in Atlantis or the planet of Raela), their limbs have a large reach, where they can let them float them freely in all directions. In these areas, they remain in full control and can use this magic to its full potential, and most Raelons have no problem pulling them apart in this context
But when going further away, that magic stops surrounding them, and only the magic in their body still works. This limits their range significantly, as in a way they still have limbs. If one of their limbs gets out of range, it doesn't kill them, but they can't simply float it back into place; they have to pick it up again and get it in range. Now this can be really inconvenient for Raelons, and they'd rather avoid that. There are reasons why these tethers exist. In this context, wilfully separating your body parts is seen as something intimate that requires a great deal of trust. So in Chintaka's example, she basically only trusts Tom with this.
However, for RJ there's another element to it: trauma. He has been pulled apart by bullies when he was a child, so if someone (or something) were to pull him apart, it brings up bad memories. He's much more cautious than your average Raelon, and has a great fear of drowning. He wears these tethers most of the time, and more than once he wishes he was normal. Even in the magic fields where he can move more freely, he doesn't want to, simply because of his traumatic experiences.
There is a time and place for these things, but not every Raelon is as comfortable with it...
