If you haven't seen the new True Grit, you absolutely should. If you haven't seen the '69 version with John Wayne, I'd recommend seeing that one, first. Both are magnificent examples of good Westerns, and the casting for the newer remake is just brilliant.
While I really like Mattie as a character (I identified with her a lot), I'm definitely more of a Cogburn at heart. Jive is a greasy, hateful bastard with a very serious set of morals. Which is to say I'm a greasy, hateful bastard with a very serious set of morals. They just don't happen to be everyone else's morals. But they're there, underneath all the befuddled, stubborn cynicism and drunkardly gregariousness. And may god himself help you if you cross those morals.

This makes me want to write. Perhaps I should start practicing that again.

Exciting development: I found a fucking 1st edition hardback copy of "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail in 72" with the original cover jacket. It's not in mint condition, but it's close enough for my needs. He wants $65 for the fucker, and I will give it to him if he has it next week.
