lanakila commissioned this sketch from me at FCN 2011 on the last day.He had some great photos of the real bird his character is based on, so that really helped. (red crested cardinal, native to South America)
I just love this little guy! He's so pretty and fun! see:
manukoa for more pics of him!Inked sketch with pencils in sketchbook.

I think you'll love it.
It's got a pretty standard off-the-rack romantic buddy comedy plot, but the way that the setting (Rio de Janeiro) and the birds were handled were simply brilliant. Blu's a near perfect model of a Spix's Macaw; the various characters they run into are all native to the Rio area; and the villain's a freakin' cockatoo. (Anyone that has ever had dealings with cockatoos will tell you, that's brilliant right there!)

Absolutely! He's a perfectly modeled Spix's, down to the yellow/tan iris color and the tiny little crest. Jewel (the female) is of course feminized (lighter blue, smaller, thinner, etc.) but still recognizable. Hyacinths have yellow around their eyes; Blu has none. (The first two minutes, which feature a bunch of different macaws in a huge opening dance number, have actual Hyacinth macaws for comparison. )
They just couldn't CALL them Spix's. That name in the U.S. has some...unfortunate implications. So they just called them Blue Macaws -- not entirely inappropriate, since the Spix's is nicknamed the Little Blue Macaw.

The "WTH?" wasn't so much that they changed the name "Spix's Macaw" but that they didn't just refer to them by their real nickname, Little Blue Macaw, instead of going the Captain Ersatz route. Because they worked so hard to make Blu such a realistic Spix's Macaw...
I still gotta say, though, that the character I'm most looking forward to seeing is Nigel. A rheumy, bilious old cockatoo that thinks he's Tim Curry? Mr. Flight-of-the-Conchords Jemaine Clement chewing up the scenery as said villain? I can hardly wait.

Awwwww! Thanks for posting this picture in your gallery, Sandy! I greatly enjoyed commissioning you and seeing your take on this character.
Even though Manu Koa is a 'secondary' character for me . . . . he quickly became such a fun and cute character for me. Awwwwww. Manu Koa is so adorable and so sweet. I really appreciated you illustrating Manu Koa in my sketchbook at FCN 2011!
I hope you have a great evening, Sandy!
Take care!
