Here is a daily take into the life of a dragon doctor at home and on the job.Dragon NurseYoung Starstruck is a dragoness who is also a nurse. Her job mainly consists of patient care. But she also works at a local hospital located in the medical district of the city. While her normal duties are for patient care, she also has other avenues in her service, such as receptionist work. But sometimes her job can be frustrating and take an annoying turn at times.
ILLINOIS MEDICAL DISTRICT - CHICAGO, ILLINOISMost of the time, Star is further inside of the hospital working as a doctor to most of her patients. But at this moment, she is seated behind the desk of the third-floor General Medicine Clinic as a receptionist, directing and guiding different patients to different parts of the waiting area.
The calming atmosphere inside of the large hall is enough to lull anyone to an easy sleep, patient or staff. But the staff also have a job to do in keeping things running.
Occasionally, the interior staff will pop out, announcing a name at random. To the ones scattered about in the waiting area, this seems to be just a random chance during their wait. But for the hospital staff, they are just simply going by order of patient registration.
While doctors file into the waiting area in calling registered names, Star isn't alone by herself at the reception desk. With her is a male snow leopard working the reception desk beside her, helping to take some of the workload off the dragoness.
After directing a few more people to opposite sides of the waiting area, the snow leopard attempts to make conversation with the dragoness, “Enjoying your job so far, and the view?”
Star sighs and smiles back, casually admitting, “As much as I enjoy the view and the quiet, I am enjoying this, so far. In fact, once I make it back home when break is over, I can have all the time I want for myself to explore and catch up on some stuff.”
“What do you like to do in your spare time?” The snow leopard inquires again. A soft grin is on his face while he converses with Star to pass the time. The dragoness, however, replies with a sigh, “It varies, honestly. Maybe I can tell you all about it when we're on break.”
“That's fine with me.” The snow leopard is satisfied with her statement. “I live close by, though. And with that Gateway nearby, it's no big deal to me.” When mentioning this, the feline perks up, “Say, have you ever heard of the IMD Gateway?”
Star hums, “Mmm, I’ve heard of it, but I never really paid that much attention to it. Only time I have seen it is when I’m on my way to work - I live all the way out in Plainfield. Sometimes I drive, sometimes I take the bus here.”
The snow leopard backpedals in his mind from hearing this. “Do you take the Pace Bus? There are hospitals out in Plainfield that you can work at! I’m just saying!”
“To an extent, yeah. The 755 brings me here to the hospital.” Star mentions to the surprised snow leopard. “It’s only a drop-off stop anyway, so it's no big deal. I can still drive my way to work.”
“I see. But that's still a long drive and a long ride to Stroger Hospital.” The snow leopard contemplated. “How are you able to catch the bus so early and still make it here in time to clock in?”
Star just shrugs and remarks, “Waking up early is no big deal for me. Getting to the Plainfield Park and Ride bus station is another story. It all depends on the traffic.”
“That is true though. I've never been on that bus route, personally, but I have been Downtown. The only one I'm familiar with are the Bolingbrook routes.” The snow leopard mentioned.
With Star's interest now piqued, the dragoness then whispers, “Do you live close by here, at all?”
“I actually live down the street from here. It's a short walk between here and The Lydian - it's an apartment building just down the street from here.” The spotted feline answered in return. On a side note, he whispers, “Hey, what is your name, by the way? I’m Robby.”
“Star. We met before when I was first introduced here, remember?” The dragoness claims to have met Robby and the rest of the hospital staff upon being freshly introduced to the community and her workplace. But the questionable frown on Robby's face says otherwise.
The snow leopard shakes his head and whispers, “I honestly do not remember a meeting taking place upon meeting newer staff. You're quite the newest face we have here.”
The dragoness merely shrugs in silent acknowledgement, agreeing with the snow leopard. Still, she admits, “I was a bit nervous when I first arrived; didn't really know my way around the place. Happily to say, I’m much more comfortable now!”
While the two are talking, they eventually go back to their respective jobs in patient sign-in and registry. Then when break time comes for them, they'll be back for the rest of their shift…
~~~~~GATEWAY AT IMD, CHICAGO, ILLINOISDuring their break period, Robby invited Star to the Gateway section across the street from the Professional Building of Stroger Hospital. To be brought to a part of Chicago like this is a welcome invitation for anyone; Star fully welcomed the invitation. And when they traveled to the area for their break, Star is enamored by the area. Her eyes sparkle in wonder at the sight of the Gateway with its active fountain, outdoor seating, and cluster of shops in the area. To anyone familiar with the Chicago area, it's just another landmark. But to Star herself, being a native of Plainfield, it is a dazzling sight to behold.
Just from taking in the sight alone, the IMD Gateway makes Star swell up in wonder at the location. The fountain, the shops and restaurants, everything about it just screams ‘mesmerizing’. And with it being next to Stroger Hospital makes it even more convenient - a simple quick stroll across the street and back to enjoy a quick lunch or snack break and then get back to work afterwards.
After directing the dragoness to an available spot at the outdoor seating area, Robby takes a seat across from her while directing her attention to the different shops inside the Gateway. Upon observation, Star notes, “I don't even have Starbucks or Chick-Fil-A in my area. These two are new; well, apart from the Starbucks near Midway Airport, of course.”
Robby recalls, “Isn't there a Chick-Fil-A out in North Riverside somewhere?”
Star merely shakes her head, “Ah, can't say I’m familiar with North Riverside since I never been to the area. Is that like out on Harlem Avenue somewhere?”
“Something like that. But anyways, we also have a Jimmy John's out here in case you're hungry? Tab's on me.” Robby offers to buy lunch for both of them since they're on break now. Star squirms, “Ehh, you don't have to but if that's what you want to do, I won't stop you.”
“Hmm, that sounds good! Although,” Star turns thoughtful, lightly razing her cheek with her claws at something that she just remembered. She mentions, “I have been hearing others talk about this place called Chipotle. Is that a restaurant of some kind too?”
Robby points southbound, opposite of Star’s position where the snow leopard reveals, “It's a short walk from here to the place since there is one across the street too.” The snow leopard doctor rests his hand down and stands up from his seat, his tail wagging gently. He continues, “And yes, Chipotle is also a restaurant. There are many small shops in the Illinois Medical District to check out. Not like the rundown West Side of Chicago.”
Robby begins to leave for Jimmy Johns when Star gets up to follow him, an inquisitive expression on her face. She frowns, “West Side? Is it really that bad?”
“Traveling through that area, I would say yes. There is technically nothing of interest there -” the snow leopard blows and parts his white bangs away while making his blunt opinion of the area. “- nothing but boarded up housing complexes, dilapidated buildings, and tiny convenience stores. There really is nothing of interest over there.”
“What about the Conservatory? Isn't that a point of interest or a landmark or whatever?” Star wondered out of intrigue.
“How did you hear about that? You mentioned you’re not that familiar with the whole Chicagoland area!” Robby belted out of intrigue.
Star merely shakes her shoulders in an open shrug, “I did take the Green Line once but that was when I went Downtown by the 755 to explore.” She wags her tail while fondly mentioning, “The Central Park Conservatory is a pretty interesting place to go to - lots of plants and bugs to learn about.”
Robby scoffs, “I'm sure that's the only place in the West Garfield Park area that is worth mentioning, and exploring alone. Anywhere else, it's a dead zone. No life.”
“Or we can make a field day out of it, explore the different small shops and stores in the area.” Star suggested in return, grinning at the snow leopard. Robby is still adamant about exploring West Garfield Park. To him, that area is devoid of life and a slum area. Star, on the other hand, is much more adventurous; she is more curious about exploring rather than keeping herself inside. On a side note, Star suggests, “Maybe one day we can ride the 755 all the way to Plainfield; make it a sort of exploration trip.”
Robby begins caressing his hair while muttering, “Um, I'm not so sure about that. The 755 and other routes like that seem kinda short to me, so I would rather opt for a longer trip, kinda like how New Jersey Transit operates its public coach transports.”
“Kinda, but do you think their routes are more scenic in a sense?” While Star is agreeing with Robby on the context of public transportation, the dragoness has some doubts about New Jersey Transit being similar to Pace Suburban Transit. With that sort of comparative thinking, Robby remarks in dismissal, “Each state has their own scenic rides. One transit system doesn't make it better than the other.”
Well, with that information, Star and Robby begin to head inside the Jimmy Johns submarine shop while concluding, “Eh, you’re right. It doesn't make that much sense but each state is unique, right?”
~~~~~Following a brief lunch break with their subs, Star and Robby begin to make their way back to Stroger Hospital. Along the way, Star comments, “For a submarine shop to be small like that, their sandwiches are pretty good; plus, they're priced conveniently too!”
Robby snorts in rebuttal, “Used to be priced conveniently too - gotta pay at least nearly $10 for a footlong or close to $8 for a six-inch! Almost like Subway!”
“Even though the prices are high, the stuff is still good.” Star maintains her argument at first when she agrees with the snow leopard, “But stuff is high now, unfortunately. Nothing like inflation to ruin a lot of good planning.”
While making the trek back to the Professional Building in crossing Ogden Avenue, Star observes a Pace Suburban Transit MCI D4000CT on the Route 755 going southbound; behind it, a CTA New Flyer D40LF on the Route 50, also going southbound. Impressed, Star nudges Robby and points out the buses passing by, “Robby, look!”
The running head on the blue / white MCI D4000CT is displayed on the front and side, a bit bolder than the CTA running head:
755 PLAINFIELD755 OLD CHICAGO50 DAMEN TO50 ORANGE LINE“Hmm? Oh, those buses?” Robby’s blue eyes dilate slightly out of interest upon noticing the coach bus passing by where he mentions, “I’ve those same buses downtown, but on a different type of route - I think it’s a combined Bolingbrook - Loop Express route.”
“The 850 and 851 I think are combined into one. I learned about them through the Pace Suburban Transit website.” Star admits. “Plus, 855 doesn't run through the Illinois Medical District unlike 755.”
Just when the duo enter the hospital entrance on Taylor Street, Robby pauses in his tracks, sensing something is not quite right. Star notices this and whispers to Robby, “Hey Robby, is something wrong?”
The snow leopard begins to sniff around for a bit when he reveals, “A couple weeks ago, we had a Code Brown here. But it turned out to be a gas leak - nothing hazardous. We still evacuated everyone out.”
Star squeaks, “Ehh, but that was only a couple of weeks ago! The hospital should have been closed down if that’s the case!”
“Then how are we gonna do our jobs?” Robby retorted in derision. He picks back up his walking pace while heading back to his post. “A gas leak is something you don't play with - in this case, it was relatively brief, so that was fortunate enough not to cause any problems. We took precautions and that was it.”
After punching the elevator button, Robby checks his watch while Star observes, “This side is much quieter on the higher floors than the old building.”
“More concentration and more chances of falling asleep.” Robby grumbled out in return.
Following a brief elevator ride to the third floor for General Medicine, the pair emerge and are greeted by a tan / white furred husky, who notices Star right off the bat!
“Say Robby, who's this?” The husky’s tail is wagging in a moderate, yet friendly manner while staring keenly at the dragoness in question. At first, Star attempts to back away but Robby gently grabs her shoulder and introduces her to him, “Joseph, this is Star, our newest hire to the team.”
“I didn't know you were our newest recruit! Welcome to the team, Star!” Anyone this excited could have just easily shook hands with Star until her bones rattled. Instead, Joseph welcomes Star with a greeting hug, elated to meet the newest recruit to their hospital team. But what happens next serves to be an intriguing moment for Star, and a casual occurrence for Robby.
Withdrawing from the dragoness, Joseph turns to Robby and salutes him, declaring, “And for you, Robby, keep up the good work! We're all in this together!”
Robby salutes Joseph in return, acknowledging him with a silent sendoff where he watches the husky leave around the corner. The pair later return to their positions by the elevators where they now have to contend with an almost full waiting room. However, there seems to be a problem…
“What the?! I can't sign back in!” Robby's sudden complaint immediately draws Star’s attention where she leans over and observes an error message popping up on the computer he is working at. Thinking nothing of it at first, Star concludes, “Someone must have changed the password system without informing you. I’ve had that situation before at a temp agency for healthcare.”
Robby shakes his head, “Password systems have strong encryption and protection to deter hacking. How is yours working but mine isn't?”
Star becomes silent, lost on how to answer the snow leopard. But she drops a hint at what may be the case, “Somebody must have slipped in unannounced and changed the system on your end. We should probably call a technician, or you can try and reset the password system on your work desk. Tell ya what, I’ll handle the check-in, you handle your situation the best way you can. When I get done, I’ll do what I can to assist you.”
Robby takes Star’s advice until he pauses upon having second thoughts. Then something else comes to him where his mind wanders back to Joseph - could the husky have made the mistake of changing the passcode system? As much as Robby wanted to confront Joseph now, he couldn't do so due to being on the clock at the moment. But he will make sure to speak to the husky directly once their shifts end.
All Robby could do since he was locked on his end was support Star in checking patients in for their appointments and sending them to different seating areas. That was all throughout the remainder of his shift.
~~~~~Closing time came by faster than Robby had anticipated. The lights to the clinic are being turned off during the time where everyone is getting off work, or rather, the last remaining members of the medical staff. Grabbing their items and coats, Robby and Star begin to leave the now-darkened and closed clinic when they hear a shout behind them, “Hey guys, wait up!”
The pair turn to see Joseph bounding to meet them, to which Star and Robby share a knowing stare while returning to observe the husky racing to meet them. When they disappear into the elevator and reappear on the bottom floor, Robby takes Joseph aside to confront him directly, withdrawing to the bathroom area. It is here that Robby gets straight to the point and mentions, “Earlier today at the GMC, I couldn't sign in on my assigned post. Can you tell me why?”
Joseph blinks at the snow leopard, thinking he’s grown a second head. “You dragged me aside for this?! Of course I didn't…” the moment the husky trails off, realization dawns on Joseph where he grimaces, “Sorry about that man, I forgot to tell you that I had changed the passcode system. That in itself is still a work in progress due to the huge hacking scheme we've faced last year.”
“I remember that; that, and the new ticket thing is still being implemented throughout the entire Illinois Medical District.” Robby concluded. Patting Joseph on the shoulder, Robby remarks, “Joseph, I'm not mad at you; you could have told us sooner, that way I'd have known beforehand.”
“I’ll remember that - keeping that in mind, next time.” Joseph gives Robby a ‘peace sign’ farewell in departure where the two male doctors separate and leave the hospital. Star, meanwhile, has already left - she is outside, waiting for the Pace bus to arrive so she can go back to her native town of Plainfield.
Usually, every few minutes, a CTA bus (New Flyer D40LF or Novabus LFS) would come by. But Star is not looking to board CTA since that will take her off-course (CTA 50 and Pace 755 run together from Stroger Hospital to the Damen CTA Pink Line Station). Instead, the dragoness is keeping an eye out for the Pace Express to board which will take her back to Plainfield. However, no Pace Bus is in sight, at least not yet. For now, it is mostly cars, trucks, and the occasional CTA bus going north and south. However, Star also hears someone calling out to her and notices Robby dashing to meet her.
Inquisitive, Star wonders, “Robby?? What do you need for me? I'm just going back to Plainfield, is all.”
“Well we're not on actual break yet, we still have our work shifts for one more day and then we can call it a day.” Robby invites Star to come with him where he encourages her, “You can stay with me for the time being at my apartment in the Lydian! It's just a short walk from here to the complex.”
Just at that moment, Star begins to ponder on the decision when she and Robby spot a bold orange running head approaching in the distance. It is the bus she is waiting for! But upon reflecting on the snow leopard's incentive, the dragoness begrudgingly accepts the offer and shrugs, “Meh, what the heck. It's only for a day, right? I'm in!”
Star begins to leave the bus stop, watching the public transit motorcoach roll by. Ironically, Star harrumphs, “Hah, it's just going to Plainfield only!”
When Robby turns to see what Star is talking about, he glimpses the side while it rolls past when the running head actually displayed reads the following:
755 PLAINFIELD ONLYLIMITED STOPS ONLY“I take it that bus is on an express route?” Robby can only assume the disappearing motorcoach for Pace Express is one of many public transit buses for fast travel.
“Honestly, yes.” Star confirmed. “755 is an express route. There used to be more Express routes like the 757, 877/888, and I think the 768?” The dragoness is unsure of the last route number but she includes a valid point next, “A lot of Pace routes were decommissioned during the Covid-19 pandemic. And what a nightmare that was…”
Robby shakes his head slowly, sticking his hand up at her, “No need to remind me. We lost so many medical staff to the disease it's not even funny. But trying to convince stupid people that it's real doesn't seem to work.”
“Do you think being a bus driver for public transit is harder than being a doctor or a nurse?” Star’s sudden change of course causes Robby to pause in stride. The snow leopard later turns around in consideration and reveals, “Honestly, through past experiences I’ve seen and heard while riding on public transportation, yes. Working for public transportation, whether it be bus or train, is harder. You have to deal with belligerent riders, petty attitudes, attacks on your person, and crazy drivers.”
Star acknowledges the snow leopard's complaint and argues tentatively, “That's funny - that's typical CTA chaos right there. Pace isn't like that.”
Robby, however, rolls his eyes and returns to walking again, huffing, “Star, you don't understand - CTA, Pace, or whatever, danger affects everyone. No city, community, or person is safe.”
“I get that but regardless of the danger level, it's still fun to ride public transportation.” Star cracks a soft smile, staring fondly at the snow leopard in return. “What I really would love to do is go exploring, like explore around the CTA and Pace, consecutively.”
“Best way to start is to navigate across the express route first. Then when you reach Union Station, you can explore all you want from there.” The snow leopard advised.
“Then it's a date!” The dragoness is more than happy to accept and follow the advice, and more than happy to begin exploring. The pair later disappear amidst the traffic running along the IMD.
~~~~~After spending the rest of the day at Robby's first floor apartment at the Lydian, Star is back at work behind the reception desk - another long, quiet, somewhat boring workday. During the stay at Robby's apartment, Star got to know the snow leopard more, eventually learning that he is a medic in the United States Army. Even more interesting, he is the youngest of a military family of three brothers where he is the youngest.
Fantasizing over the snow leopard, Star is temporarily distracted until she refocuses with her ears flying up from her name being called. “Star?? …Star!”
“Huh?!” Snapping fingers aid in snapping Star from her little trance, where she jumps from being startled. Upon finally noticing a pair of tan hands in her face, she trails her eyes over to land on Joseph, who is now sitting beside her for the time being in the reception area at the elevators.
Joseph chuckles triumphantly, having snapped the dragoness from her daydream. “Haha! Finally gotcha, Star!” The husky then goes on to relax, inquiring, “Seriously Star, what's up? You've never been this spaced out on the job before.”
Star blushes, “Oh nothing, just thinking about last night with a new friend.”
Joseph turns his attention to the line while his ears go up at the sound of a familiar voice. He turns back to Star with a knowing stare and guesses, “Robby, right?”. Seeing the dragoness nod, Joseph relates, “Yep, he is an amazing friend and confidant. Robby's a good team player too. He has his moments like everyone else but he is a team player.”
Star's blush remains even while she claims, “Joseph, it's just friendship. Nothing big is going on between us.”
The husky chuckles, “I'm aware of that. You're safe with me too.”
Throughout the rest of their shift up to breaktime, Star and Joseph work together to get everyone waiting in line checked in with no complications. At a quiet part in their shift, Joseph laments, “I still can't get over how I forgot to inform Robby about the change to the passcode system. Man, that really blows!”
“Uh Joseph? Not in public, please.” Star mumbles out in warning to the disappointed husky. “We can discuss that matter among ourselves when we're on break.”
Joseph releases a breath and sighs, “Okay; duly noted.”
~~~~~The rest of the morning shift went by without provocation, and no further issues popped up during the workday. This time, Robby, Joseph, and Star headed outside for their break at the IMD Gateway for some fresh air and a snack to add to their lunch to pass the time. But some situations still needed to be discussed inside the team boundaries.
While seated outdoors at a dining table, the medical trio were treated by Robby to some Starbucks coffee and snacks, to which Star notices, “You must really love coffee a lot, Robby. Are you a caffeine addict?”
Robby refutes her claim, blowing aside a portion of his white bangs. He claims, “I am not a caffeine addict! Yes, I drink coffee, but I enjoy the taste of it. Only thing is, I don't drink mine straight black like some people do. I like mine with cream and sugar or just cream.”
“Flavored coffees are better, just like flavored hot chocolate drinks and other beverages are better than the original.” Joseph accounted for himself while agreeing with Robby on the coffee subject. Then he turns to Star next for her opinion on what she likes about coffee, if she likes it at all. “What about you, Star? Do you like coffee and hot chocolate?”
Star makes a sort of whining noise and reports, “Meh, I don't drink coffee that much but I don't really care too much for it. I like hot chocolate more but I am more of a tea and juice drinker.”
The conversation is suddenly interrupted by a blaring horn in the background, completely startling the three doctors. They are treated to a view of a random pedestrian sprinting across the street after a near-miss collision with a northbound Pace Suburban Transit MCI D4000CT on Route 755 and a red traffic car. Recognizing the bus, Star observes the running head which displays the same heading as the southbound direction of travel:
755 UNION STATION755 VIA IMD“I bet that bus driver is angry; I’d be raging mad too by some dunce rolling across the street.” Robby remarked. “People really need to look both ways before crossing the street.”
Joseph recognizes the bus and claims, “Hey, I’ve seen a similar bus like that one downtown. Only thing is, it's on a different route. What gives, really?”
Star reveals, “The other route is a combined route involving Bolingbrook and Plainfield. It's a combination route, so there could be less chances of pickups and more drop-offs. Plus, there are only a few motorcoach buses used for those routes instead of the rest of the bus fleet.”
“How do you know so much about Pace anyway?” Joseph inquired. It wasn't an accusatory tone, but more of a curious acknowledgement which he directed towards Star in wanting to learn more.
“I take the Pace bus out here sometimes and I drive here to work sometimes, but I also live out in Plainfield too.” Star related. “All the information I found is on the Pace website.”
“You live all the way out in Plainfield?” Joseph blinks at Star in surprise upon learning of Star’s hailing. He then turns impressed while mentioning, “So you're a suburban girl!”
“You can say that, though I am more of the adventurous type.” Star chuckled. “I love exploring.”
“And so do we,” Robby acknowledged in agreement, “to an extent, of course.”
“Yeah, whether we're in the Middle East or in Asia, whatever spot we have abroad as our assignment, of course.” Joseph rambled.
“You guys are military, right?” Star guessed. “Makes sense since you guys happen to mention the Middle East. Have you guys deployed there before?”
“We have been given assignments, but we have deployed a few times, mostly in Afghanistan and Iraq.” Robby accounted, remarking his experience regarding himself and his team. “That was during the War on Terror where we were handling business as medics. We were on and off the battlefield at times, but our experience speaks for itself sometimes.”
“You guys were combat medics in the War on Terror??” Star squeaks, blinking in surprise. Her stunned silence prompts Robby to explain, “We served in Afghanistan during the War on Terror and the Afghan War, though I’m still pissed that we were ordered to return home during that time.” The snow leopard’s blue eyes become annoyed marbles where he rolls his eyes at grumbling his statement about the 20-year Afghan War.
“If we had stayed in Afghanistan, the country wouldn't have fallen to the Taliban.” Joseph lamented. “Then if we had defied orders to jet, we would've been reprimanded!”
Star sighs wistfully, “Sounds pretty exciting and pretty frustrating. I wish I could have been there among you guys. But I prefer sticking close to home instead of being blown up by insurgents.”
Joseph sweatdrops while Robby flinches. The snow leopard draws a breath while the husky rubs his neck, clearly distressed. The tense silence causes Star to whine, “I didn't mean to offend anyone!”
“Star, don't leave! You didn't offend us; you’re good.” Robby reaches out to grab her and reassure her that she is not being offensive in any way; she's just speaking her mind. Backing up his own claim, the snow leopard adds, “You just brought up some memories for us - and on the safe side, we agree with you.”
“From all the attacks that we’ve faced directly, I’ll take a bus ride over being shot at any day.” Joseph remarked. He then adds, “Apart from the small altercations we do face at the hospital, we’ve had to save ‘Spotty Boy’ over here from becoming Swiss cheese.” (“HEY!!!” Imagine a red speech bubble to the right depicting Robby, off-camera in chibi form with an angry throbbing vein on his forehead and angry blue eyes.)
The snow leopard draws a breath and blushes at the nickname given to him by the husky. Then he turns to a curious Star and reveals why he has been targeted so much, “Remember when I said I'm the youngest of three boys in a military family?” Seeing the dragoness slowly nod in silence, Robby fully admits, “My father is a Four-Star General in the United States Army, and he's been very busy conducting business and military matters. Some of those matters have crossed controversial topics which have left some people unhappy.*
“You're kidding, right? You're a hero yourself in the eyes of these citizens!” Star attempts to rebuff Robby's claim of being a high-value target himself, only for Joseph to join in with an experience of his own, “Try telling that to someone who's been targeted twice in back-to-back drive-by shootings.”
Taking in the information, Star eventually deflates in her seat and bemoans, “Why did I pick here? I thought Chicago was a great city!”
“If Los Angeles is the carjacking capital of the world, Chicago is the murder capital of the world.” Joseph commented in return to Star’s lament. Enough with being discouraging! Robby snorts, “Guys, look, any place is dangerous; keep in mind that crime is everywhere and life goes on. But we don't discourage anyone from living, period.”
Just then, Star accumulates an idea in her mind, “Say, you guys want to visit me on my return trip to Plainfield? It's only for the weekend until we go back to work.”
“I’d love to; I wouldn't mind seeing your apartment. The trip sure is worth it for a break from ‘Murder City’. And the exploration can also be fresh air.” Robby agrees to the demand, now what about Joseph.
His tail wagging moderately, Joseph hums in thought while trying to make up his mind. He wants to go but isn't so sure. Eventually, the husky decides, “Star, I’ll get back to you later on that. We can get back to our shifts now.”
“Fine by me!” Star chirps in agreement. While her hopes are up for Robby joining her for her visit, she also hopes that Joseph is along for the ride too. Only time will tell.
~~~~~Following the recovery of their break time and the remainder of their shift, no complications were announced throughout the remainder of their work spaces. Things went smoothly regarding patient check-in and ticket number, though the latter was still slightly confusing. Regardless, Robby, Star, and Joseph were glad to be leaving the clinic once they were done with their shifts. But since they were leaving the hospital, they can now join Star on her return trip to her native Plainfield. At least, Robby can; Joseph is still unsure on the matter, even while they're walking outside. Along the way, Star notices a familiar Pace Suburban Transit MCI D4000CT approaching from the southbound direction, but unlike the last few times, the running head displayed shows the bus not taking any routes; not only is it out of service, but it may also be heading to a designated garage located elsewhere.
TO GARAGECoincidentally, a CTA New Flyer DE60LF articulated bus passes by in the southbound direction; unlike the public transit motorcoach, this one is not busy and completely empty.
NOT IN SERVICE“Damen is usually busy at this time of day too. And Pace stops running in a couple of hours, doesn't it?” Robby questions Star on the schedule, yet at the same time, the dragoness is checking for the arrival time of the next Pace Express via the Pace Suburban Transit app on her phone. Only after she's done does Star finally announce her findings. “The next express bus will be here in a few minutes.”
Robby frowns from Star not paying attention to him and he tries again, setting his hands on his hips, “Star! Were you listening??”. On seeing the annoyed expression on the snow leopard’s face, Star blushes, “Oh, sorry. I was just tracking when the next express bus will arrive. What did you say, Robby?”
His tail swinging around in annoyance, Robby recites his claim in a nutshell, “I was simply asking if Pace stops running at certain times.”
The dragoness immediately answers back in claiming the schedule times running out, “Pace isn't like CTA to an extent - Pace stops running in a couple hours along with weekday trips being suspended sometimes. I’ve been hearing of alternate schedule changes to some suburban routes as well as some suspended routes being brought back into service.”
“Like the 320, for instance?” Robby assumed. “That's the most common route that has been taken throughout Pace.”
“And so are East Roosevelt Road, 22nd - Cermak, and West North Avenue.” Star agreed. “Who knows when that will be but yes, I have heard of it through news on the website, I think.”
“Hey guys, the bus is coming now!” Joseph makes out an approaching public transit motorcoach in the distance coming in the southbound direction upon crossing the Eisenhower Freeway. The public transit motorcoach is another Pace Suburban Transit MCI D4000CT with the typical running head display of said route.
755 PLAINFIELD755 OLD CHICAGOHaving made up his mind in this span of time, Joseph finally reveals, “Star, I’ve decided I’m tagging along with you for a little visit; it's nice to get away once in a while.”
“You guys have your Ventra cards, right?” Star checked while pulling her own out. She shoots Robby and Joseph anticipating expressions of readiness while turning her attention to the public transit motorcoach that is before them. The large blue / white Pace Express behemoth crawls beside the curb to meet them with the doors sliding apart.
“Route 755 westbound to Plainfield Express”~~~~~“Approaching Damen and Roosevelt.”*** Damen Ave and Roosevelt RdWhile Star and Robby are seated in the middle by the entry doors, Joseph is sitting right behind them. Also onboard are a few other passengers having boarded for the ride, though some stops are ‘Pick Up Only’. On the other hand, these ‘Pick Up Only’ stops also serve to be drop off spots like regular routes. Save for the bouncy ride and whining Cummins ISX12 engine, the motorcoach ride is pretty comfortable, compared to regular bus rides among the Pace and CTA fleets. But unlike the regular buses, the motorcoach does not have a kneeling action or wheelchair ramp option.
“Honestly, I have never been on a motorcoach before; I mean I have, but not like this.” Robby comments on his experience riding a large behemoth like this. Even Star agrees, “You'll get used to it after a while. It's better than riding on a regular city bus along a freeway.”
“How so? This is my very first time on a motorcoach.” Joseph wondered. The husky begins to shuffle and eventually relax in his seat, sinking into the seat in complete silence.
“The next stop will be: Damen Pink Line CTA Station”*** Damen Pink Line CTA Station“This bus really is moving fast! And the seats are pretty comfortable!” Robby noted while resting his arms on the armrests. He observes, “I remember riding more of these now, but in upstate New Jersey.” This causes several passengers, Star included, to take interest in the snow leopard's comment.
Amid the stopping approach with the motorcoach pulling up at the bus stop for the Damen Pink Line station, Robby reminisced, “It was a training seminar for something. I think it was updated medical procedures, or something combat-related with medicine. I decided to explore the New Jersey area and they have a lot of transit buses that are like this.”
“Ohhh, I heard that Pace Express has their I-90 transit project open and I would like to take a spin on those routes someday. The BRT buses from ENC AXESS aren't even close to these, but the seats they got nailed down.” Star giggled.
“I think I rode one of those to the Elgin Transportation Center. Was it? 605? 603? I kinda forgot but it was something along those lines.” Joseph remembered, scratching his chin in thought.
Amidst the whining of the transmission and the engine in the background, the ride started to get a little bumpy occasionally along the rest of the ride on Damen Avenue. Only after reaching the Stevenson Freeway do things get smoother on the way to Plainfield. Star even mentions, “I always enjoyed riding on the expressway. It's a scenic trip to and from home and back.”
“Doesn't Pace run on weekends too?” Joseph questioned suddenly, speaking up from the attention to the conversation.
“Some routes like this do not operate on the weekend. If I was to leave work on the weekend, I'd rather drive myself to and from home if that's the case.” Star cranes her head over her shoulder to answer Joseph directly in his inquiry. “Besides, this is normally how I save gas myself when going to work.”
“That's a really good way to save gas and energy.” Robby noted. “At least you get more exercise by walking. But you do drive, right?”
“Yes, that's right. But I only drive when I need to.” Star acknowledged. Then she admits, “Regardless, I enjoy exploring whether it is by car or train, so saving gas is one way to cut down on driving and get more exercise.”
“Wish we all could do that;” Robby agreed, settling down into his seat. He further remarks, “after all, not everyone who works there actually lives in Chicago, but in a nearby suburb. Only thing is, this is the only express route by Pace that serves the Illinois Medical District. They should really do more routes like this that serve the IMD.”
While Robby shifts his head to stare out the wrapped window (if he can see out the window at all), Joseph argues, “That's easy for you to say, Robby. I live close by the hospital myself and I sometimes stay at my brother's - Daniel is a doctor like us but he lives out in Cicero. And regarding the public transit approach, there's no telling whether or not Pace will incorporate a second express route serving the IMD. We already have the 50 and 157 from CTA and there's no telling what will happen in the future.”
“Well Pace has already rolled out electric buses for service, so they're beginning to add charging stations to their garages just like CTA.” Star noted.
“Never rode an electric bus before but I bet their take-off time is pretty quick.” Joseph muttered. “Anyways, this ride is really comfy!”
The rest of the ride to Plainfield is peaceful with no complications or accidents along the way. But once the motorcoach exits off the expressway, the scenery changes to a more suburban landscape; Star is smiling, happy to be back in her native town while Robby and Joseph stare around at the scenery in awe of the changing landscape.
“Now approaching: Old Chicago Park and Ride”***Bolingbrook Dr / Old Chicago Park and RideStar muses to herself in thought, ‘We're almost there! I can feel my excitement growing!’ Her excitement growing, Star’s tail begins to swish around while approaching the end of the line for the express ride to Plainfield. Even Robby and Joseph are mesmerized by the new scenery. And by the time they reach the end of the line at the Plainfield Park and Ride station, the area is a peaceful little lot.
“Approaching Plainfield Park and Ride”*** Plainfield Park and RideHaving reached the end of the line, the remaining passengers get off the bus and begin scattering, going their separate ways. Amidst the small crowd are Star, Robby, and Joseph. While taking in the scenery after departing, Robby comments, “This is quite peaceful. This is a beautiful lot!”
“It's the Plainfield Park and Ride center for Pace!” Star begins to guide Robby and Joseph on a small tour of the parking center, to which she points out her own car in the lot - a red Volvo S90. “And that is my car over there.”
“That is a nice car you got!” On spotting the red Volvo, Robby comments on the Swedish sedan out of interest, “Could it be an R-Design? Your car is pretty shiny.”
“Looks like you have great taste in cars, Star. I’ll have you help me out in getting a new one!” Joseph chuckled.
Amidst the car talk, there happens to be another express bus idling before departure, which Star also locates and points out to them. Same bus, yet different route as displayed on the running head
855 MICHIGAN/855 SUPERIOR“This is a relatively peaceful Park and Ride spot to be at, which I don't mind exploring with you guys. The invitation is still open, of course.” Star marches to her Volvo, grinning while staring back at her two new friends. While she is eager to show them around her hometown, she is more eager to show them around her house.
“Man, I should probably take a video tour of this to show to my family.” Robby concluded, gazing around at the scenery. “I’d like to show this to my family.”
“Who are you telling - I want to visit this spot with my brother!” Joseph acknowledged in agreement.
~~~~~Much like the conversation she had with Robby earlier in the week, Star actually doesn't live that far from the Plainfield Park and Ride spot in the town. And her apartment is a cozy suburban home with a garage and driveway included. But the moment they arrive at Star’s house in pulling up to the driveway, the dragoness is more than eager to be at home, quickly disappearing inside while leaving her two new friends behind. Yet as they too enter, Star calls out, “Make yourselves at home! I can give you guys a brief tour if you want!”
“We can do the tour tomorrow - oh…?” One moment Star is in her work clothes and the next moment, she is in a green dragon onesie. The dragoness giggles at the snow leopard’s open-mouthed expression and teases him, “Rawr! I don't care if I look silly in it - I love these things!”
Slowly, Robby closes his mouth just as Joseph peeks at her, his own eyes widening in wonder. The husky's reaction is different where he compliments her on the outfit, “You look rather cute in it. It suits you well.”
“Thanks, Joseph.” Star responded in kind. Then in mock offense to Robby, she throws up her arms in a sort of dramatic effect to insinuate, “At least someone likes me!”. But seeing a gracious smile occur on Robby's face, as opposed to his former reaction, Star giggles and admits, “I really love these things - they help me relax more after a long or strenuous day at work.”
“I’ll bet you don't have one of our kind.” The expression on Robby's face turns into a smirk where he gets that Star doesn't have the same thing in a different format. But little does the snow leopard know the dragoness is a collector of these things. She then invites the snow leopard and husky upstairs to her personal room and here, she showcases her onesie pajama collection to them - pajamas and onesies of every kind and every species are either hung up on clothing hangers or folded on the bed in the middle of the room.
~~~~~“Oh man, I feel so weird wearing this but I love it! It's so soft!” Robby and Joseph are wearing onesies just like Star. While Robby is in a snow leopard onesie, minus the spots, Joseph is wearing a black / white Siberian Husky onesie outfit.
Even Joseph chortles, “I feel so out of place in this thing but it's so soft! It's really snug!”
“Glad you like ‘em!” Star giggled, while sticking her tongue out a bit. The dragoness then mentions, “What do you guys think about the idea of a sleepover?”
“Um, let's not go that far, okay?” Robby blushed, mildly uncomfortable. The snow leopard wasn't quite ready for such an occasion yet. Neither was Joseph. Though the husky also has other things on his mind, both men had better things to occupy themselves with. A sleepover is the last of their concerns, but they still thanked Star in appreciation for her offer.
Although a little disappointed at first, Star’s mood picks back up where she mentions something else that is more enjoyable between them, “Why don't we share a movie night or go stargazing?”
“I was thinking about a nature walk or probably exploring the town.” Joseph spoke up.
“Stargazing, then movie, then bed.” Robby suggested between them. While the idea seemed good to the snow leopard, Joseph is on board with the idea. And after some reasoning on her part, Star eventually agrees to the demand where she leads them outside.
~~~~~Following a brief weekend of exploring, stargazing, wearing onesies, and movie nights, the trio of friends are now having to return to work in Chicago to start their shift anew at Stroger Hospital - for this, they will have to take the Pace Express again. But they have to be at work directly in the morning around sunrise. Hopefully that won't be a problem considering the freeway traffic is light to moderate around mornings - Pace has been authorized to use flex lanes at certain intervals regarding slower traffic. By this line of travel, their chances of being late should be reduced significantly.
Robby impatiently stomps his pawfoot on the concrete while staring at the running head of a Pace Suburban Transit MCI D4000CT which has a combination route displayed in full orange:
COMBINATION ROUTE850/851/855LIMITED STOPS ONLYMICHIGAN/SUPERIOR“Is this the only express bus there is?? Where is the 755? We’re gonna be late!” While Robby impatiently demands to know when the next 755 Pace Express bus is coming, Star graces his shoulder and points out an approaching public transit motorcoach with what appears to be the running head of the displayed route. It is the route they are searching for when it displays something different.
755 PLAINFIELD ONLYLIMITED STOPS ONLYOnce the bus turns into the Plainfield Pace Park and Ride center, the running head changes when the motorcoach pulls up to the bus stop to let off any remaining passengers at the end.
“Route 755 eastbound to Jackson and Clinton”Star sighs, “Back to work we go, but we had fun, right?” The dragoness flashes a teasing smile at the snow leopard and husky doctors while boarding the motorcoach. And from that moment, the return trip begins…
~~~~~“Now approaching: Old Chicago Park and Ride”*** Bolingbrook Dr / Old Chicago Park and Ride“I wonder what we're gonna be facing this time.” Robby wondered in thought. “I wouldn't be surprised if we face more craziness later on.”
Off to the side to the other stop shed is another Pace Suburban Transit MCI D4000CT along with a Pace Express ENC National Axess BRT, both of them bearing the 755 route number on the running head from front to back:
755 PLAINFIELD755 OLD CHICAGO755 OLD CHICAGO ONLYLIMITED STOPS ONLYUpon noticing the ENC Axess BRT, Joseph comments, “Y'know, that's the same bus I rode on I-90! But what's it doing out here??”
“Must be a bus shortage of some kind. Not sure what that particular one is doing on this route but I have never seen those on this route before.” Star noted while gazing at the Pace Express BRT. After a short while, the motorcoach they're on proceeds to pull off, departing from the Old Chicago Park and Ride and proceeding onwards to the Stevenson Expressway.
Along the way, Robby remarks, “I rarely ride Pace but this is a good one. As far as the buses are concerned, this one is much better because the seats are comfy and it's much higher up. But as far as the service itself is concerned, you rarely see training buses in the actual Chicagoland area unlike CTA.”
“At least the service is better. But enough with that - I'm ready to go back to work but I don't know about you guys.” Joseph concluded while resting back in his seat.
“I am, though I am not looking forward to seeing and taking down any more crazies.” Star shuddered. “Haven't we dealt with that enough in the past already?”
“Star, look - Robby and I are war veterans who have been targeted individually, so we're used to it. I don't know about you but if you're scared, we have your back.” The husky reminded Star of their war experience, leaving the dragoness to pause and reflect on that. Although Star herself has never seen war, she has heard about it and seen images of it in different outlets - these nearly broke her heart.
Robby encouragingly reminds Star, “Hey, don't beat yourself up Star! We got each other covered so there is nothing to worry about.” While the snow leopard drapes an arm around Star, Joseph points out another public transit motorcoach traveling on the left shoulder in the westbound lanes; the husky whispers, “Guess the traffic on the other side is jam-packed. It's usually light in the morning time.”
“Depends on whether or not there's been an accident - that's at any time and any place, regardless of the time of day or location.” Robby pointed out. That particular motorcoach has a different route displayed which was almost the same, but different; this running head read:
855 PLAINFIELD855 VIA BURR RIDGEStar hums, “Meh, that's true. Even after driving to work and back sometimes, I face heavy traffic sometimes, but in no way am I going on the shoulder to skip through that. It's not only about impatience, but there is also the possibility of getting a flat tire or getting into an accident of some kind.”
“Cops are a possibility too. Chances are they'll pull you over for driving on the shoulder.” Robby acknowledged in agreement. “But unless it's heavy traffic, or a flex bus lane, you’re stuck.”
Joseph rolls his eyes, having listened in on the conversation while gazing out the window. The husky also joins the conversation, putting in his own two cents, “Traffic jams are the worst. They are the absolute, most horrible situation to be in unless you come across or be involved in an accident of some kind. But as far as working at the hospital is concerned, I’m ready for my work shift.” He goes on to sarcastically ramble, “Yeah, more sleeping on the job, more quiet time, less sleepless nights, more check-ins and handling patients, things like that.”
Robby groans, “Oh, don’t remind me! We’ve had to deal with the risk of falling asleep on the job because it's so quiet up there! And that's not even the worst part of the job!”
A questionable side-eye from Star and without looking back at Joseph, the dragoness remarks to them both, “The worst type of situation - I don't know what's worse - being in the emergency room during a Code Blue call or having to evaluate the premises under various threats.”
“My brother can tell you all about those Code Blue calls. I have never seen him more traumatized and ragged than our trip in Afghanistan during the War on Terror and the prisoner scandals surrounding that.” Joseph shakes his head in remorse, “Inhumane!”
“Hey Joseph, aren’t you guys serving in different departments throughout Stroger Hospital?” Robby questions the husky regarding their stations, to which Joseph recalls, “I’m with you guys for General Medicine Check-in; my brother, Daniel, is with the emergency room staff.”
“I remember being switched to serve in the emergency room. That was a horrible experience.” Robby complained. He further laments, “Never have I seen more stretchers or prisoners in one time than that!”
Star recalls, “I’ve been to that area once - never again. Too many patients dying and going under. To witness all of that is horrible.” The dragoness then goes on to imply, “I don't know what's worse - watching a patient die, stumbling across a crime scene as a cop, taking 911 calls as a dispatcher, or experiencing war as a soldier in the military.”
“Look,” Joseph answered with a dry chuckle, “between the three of us, you don't experience the ‘thousand yard stare’ or experience nightmares and panic attacks when you're a dispatcher. You get those more when you're a cop, soldier, or medical assistant, regardless of where you serve.”
“The Covid-19 pandemic sucked. We all had a shortage of staff at that time, especially when it got bad.” Robby reminisced with a wry smirk. He shakes his head slowly, “Never knew a virus was that powerful. And people who were claiming it was fake still got it and died from it.”
“Well polio is no joke and neither is the Spanish Flu.” Star recalls through history. “Polio does sound like a weird disease but after seeing images of what it does to the body as a whole, you do not take it for granted. Same with the Spanish Flu. What makes COVID any different from the other diseases plaguing this world?”
Joseph shrugs, “Your guess is as good as ours. We even ran commercials to take this stuff seriously. And when we rolled out the vaccines, we even pleaded for people to get vaccinated.”
“I remember that. Even my mom and dad volunteered to be vaccinated. And that's what inspired us to follow too.” Robby recalled further.
During the conversation, the ride exits the Stevenson Expressway and is now on Damen Avenue, heading to the Illinois Medical District. Only thing is, these will be stops that are Drop Off Only, so no passengers can be picked up at these next stops.
“The next stop will be: Damen CTA Pink Line Station.”*** Damen CTA Pink Line“Well guys, we’re almost there! Once we hit Polk, that’ll be our stop!” Star announced. She begins to bounce lightly in her seat while anticipating the arrival.
“At least we get to go back home.” Robby mentioned, hinting at the travel time between work and home. He gives a passing wink towards Star while also inviting her to stay at his apartment for the time being, “Say Star? You wouldn't mind staying at my place for this work week, would you?”
“I wouldn't mind as long as we have some fun off work and between breaks.” Star reported. She then addresses Joseph, “Say, Joseph, would you like to hang out with us in the meantime?”
“Approaching Damen and Roosevelt.”*** Damen Ave and Roosevelt Rd“I wouldn't mind that! Sure! As long as we all get to hang out collectively, I’m game!” Joseph agrees to the proposal, securing his decision in the process.
Recognizing the area, Robby points out, “I can see the Pink Line tracks from here - too bad there's no stop for Roosevelt, but at least Polk is convenient. I wonder if we can take the Pink Line to the Loop and transfer over to a Pace Express Route…”
“Approaching Damen and Taylor”*** Damen Ave and Taylor St“I don't know if that's possible because none of the Pace routes connect to any of the Loop stations.” Joseph concluded, rubbing his chin in thought. “Only transfer spot we’ll have to walk to is Union Station to get on the 755.”
“Approaching: Damen and Polk”*** Damen Ave and Polk St*DING!*“Stop Requested”Stop RequestedStar pushes a button that is located overhead to signal a stop request. And with the drop off stops in close proximity, Star begins to get up and make her way to the front of the motorcoach with Robby and Joseph after announcing, “That's our stop! Come on, guys!”
“Route 755 eastbound to Jackson and Clinton”After disembarking from the public transit motorcoach, the trio begin to proceed when Robby offers an incentive of his own to start their day off, “You guys want to hit the coffee shop that is next to that gift store in the old building? I can cover us all!”
Joseph licks his lips, already having an idea of what he wants, “Their white hot chocolate rocks! I love it! But it doesn't compare to what Starbucks has to offer!”
“Honestly, I’m more worried about us starting our day off right but yeah, I don't mind getting something from the coffee shop.” Star reluctantly accepted Robby's proposal after voicing her own opinion. But she eventually yields to the demand. “I wouldn't mind something myself like a yes or an orange juice.”
The moment they walk into the hospital via Polk Street entrance, Joseph immediately sees a black and white husky on standby, appearing to be reviewing something. Recognizing the husky, Joseph bounces to meet him while calling out to him. “Daniel!!”
His ears flying up, Daniel raises his head from his clipboard to notice his tan furred brother racing to meet him, to whom he cracks a smile in greeting, “Joseph! You guys arrived early! Our shifts don't start until 8!” The two brothers embrace while the black husky observes the snow leopard and dragoness in the background, to which Daniel contemplates, “What brings you guys here so early? I thought you all were getting ready by now!”
Joseph elaborates, “First things first, Daniel, we decided to dip with a friend for the weekend. Second, we rode the Pace Express out here - really nice bus! Third, our new friend lives in the suburbs and since we're here now, we're heading to the coffee shop to grab something. Wanna join us?”
“I’d love to!” Daniel beamed joyfully. “I would also like to know our new rookie better too!” Star immediately blinks at Daniel upon conclusion that she is the rookie. The dragoness bleats, “Wait, so you and Robby know each other?”
“I told you last week, Star! We’re in the same unit! We're U.S Army medics!” Joseph reminded her.
“Oh.” Star blushed. “I feel stupid now.”
“It's just a brain fart, Star. It happens to us too. Now come on - let's get our day started.” Robby wraps an arm around Star to cheer her up, proceeding to lead the way. Together, the four doctors leave the area, with Star also draping an arm around Robby's shoulders.
