"Gehrman offered the hunter freedom from the hunt and hunter's dream. To show mercy by killing the hunter so that they may forget the dream and awake under the morning sun. In his words "You will be freed.. from this terrible hunters dream..." When Fawkes refused, Gehrman couldn't understand why the hunter wouldn't choose to be free from this nightmare. "Dear, oh dear, what was it? The hunt, the blood, or the horrible dream?" Gehrman has seen countless hunters who have offered their lives and those who refused like Fawkes. To him it didn't matter, it was just another mess he had to clean up. Fawkes has seen him suffer in his time in the dream. for he was a slave to the hunters dream. Fawkes fought with Gehrman not with bloodlust or for power. They fought not with hate but with mercy to save the other from the endless torment from the dream. In the end Fawkes was able to give Gehrman what he always gave to others but truly always wished he was given instead. He was given freedom from the dream and in his dying words as he faded away from the dream "The night, and the dream, were long...". While Fawkes was sadden to lay Gehrman to rest, he was happy now knowing he was finally free. His grief will be cut short, for he will have to face the true master of the dream. For he must fight one more time for if he wishes to transcend the hunt and put an end to the endless dream."
