This is a part of a worldbuilding exercise where I tried to make a group that could fit into an established universe, but was also a different take than what was already seen there. I chose the Fallout universe.
The Wraith tribe, or Wraiths, are a fairly large group of tribals, the majority of whom are ghouls. The tribe was founded shortly after the bombs fell, by a small group of survivors.
Initially, the woman responsible for most of the tribe’s religious beliefs was left behind by another group of survivors in the ruins of a library, that they believed to be fairly safe. She was schizophrenic and had run out of her medication and they had no way to get more for her, and the other survivors feared she would become dangerous. This prejudice was completely unfounded, as the second group of survivors, a few remaining high schoolers who had been on a field trip, some of which were rapidly turning into ghouls found out.
The founding mother, as she is referred to within the tribe, was skilled in wilderness survival, and through the years the new tribe started picking up additional members and thriving.
Over time, the name of the tribe that had initially been Righteous, as they were adamantly against many of the emerging raider groups, got shortened to Right, mispronounced etc, and eventually turned into Wraith. At this point the majority of the tribe were ghouls and it seemed fitting to keep the newer name.
The Wraiths are led by a descendant of the founding mother, a gangly 19 year old named Prophet. He’s a skilled strategist and leader, but he wasn’t meant to take up leadership for decades and was forced into it, as the previous leader, his mother, died in battle. This battle also drove the tribe from their usual territories where they would wander between different places to set up in summer and winter, and they are now fully nomadic.
Prophet, as all the previous leaders of the tribe, is schizophrenic, inherited genetically. Prophet can be very hard to understand when he speaks, and generally attributes many of his ideas and strategies to the voices of his ancestors. He mainly communicates through a small group of high priests, who are all very old ghouls who have knows him and his predecessors long enough to understand what he says.
As the tribe believes “the sight” is necessary for their people to survive, Prophet has taken to wearing a mostly whole radiation suit, to make sure that he does not turn ghoul before the time is right to reproduce. He also wears the leader’s warrior necklace, that unlike the ones the regular warriors wear, which is essentially a tool set, is made of bones of important tribe members of the past and only really has religious significance.
The leadership of the group is the only place the tribe places any kind of importance on lineage. Promiscuity is not only allowed but encouraged, both for ghouls and smoothskins. Pregnant women and nursing mothers are given preferential treatment with food, and supplies, as are children.
Because of this, parentage is somewhat different for Wraiths. A child will generally know who their mother is, in that a midwife witnessed her give birth, but the title of father is entirely unrelated to any genetic involvement in the child. It’s basically a title of the second major parent to the child, that should be sought out if something happens, and the tribe has fathers who have never slept with the mother, who are female, who are ghouls and therefore sterile etc. It’s entirely common to see a ghoul warrior carrying a toddler around, and the tribe’s children are entirely unafraid of ghouls. Its not uncommon to see a child who has had a nightmare seek out a strong warrior rather than their parent during the night.
Because of this acceptance, Wraith ghouls tend to use more of the same sounds ferals make to communicate as shorthand, and most of the smoothskins of the tribe can also understand these sounds to some degree.
That being said, nudity is not necessarily seen as sexual. Living close together in tents means that sometimes you see someone’s crotch without anyone meaning to, and that’s okay. It is generally considered polite to cover your genitals, especially when dealing with someone outside the tribe, but that’s about it. And that’s whether or not you have breasts.
The boxes of dirt the tribe uses to grow vegetables and their sacred herb in, are typically strapped to brahmin to be transported during travel. The sacred herb is in itself a not very potent radiation induced hybrid of several plants, the exact mix being unknown, but likely containing peyote and mint. The herb can be used in certain mixtures to make chems drastically more potent without the added risk of addiction or overdosing. The herb is mainly used for rare rituals to enhance the sight in Prophet, or the few times the tribe is part of an actual battle.
