The witch who inhabits the rainforests around Teotihuacan. Xicohtencoatl becan her life as the daughter of the Aztec chief, Axayacatl. When her father tried to marry her off to a man she did not love, she prayed to the gods that they would stop the marriage.
Coatlicue, the goddess of the earth responded to her in a dream and informed her that she would prevent the marriage if Xicohtencoatl would devote her soul to the goddess.
Xicohtencoatl agreed, and the goddess told her that if she was to travel to the lost Temple of the Serpent and bathe in the fountain, then all her troubles would dissapear.
Apon bathing in the sacred waters, she began to change. Her body became serpentine and feathers sprouted from her head and spine. Her marriage problems would soon be a thing of the past...

Concept art for my new Quetzalcoatl based naga character, Xicohtencoatl. Her backstory needs to be refined, but this is more or less the final design for her appearance. She is meant to be a character that is not derived from my fictional universe OR any other existing works, but rather an actual world mythology. I studied Mesoamerican culture for two years in my college days, so Aztec mythology was a natural choice for me. \
This picture if of her main form, an anthropomophic serpent based on the god, Quetzalcoatl. She also has a full quetzalcoatl form (basically the same as the picture minus the human parts) and a beautiful dark skinned Aztec woman (with some snake features... such as the ability to unhinge her jaw).
Personality-wise, she is a hunter. The rainforest is her territory and any living creature that wanders onto it is fair game for the hunt. In other words, she sees humans as being no different from a deer or rabbit. She is adorned with gold jewelry, but if one wants to draw a more R-rated picture of her, she can be seen wearing a necklace of human hands and hearts... like the one worn by the goddess, Coatlicue.
She speaks Nahuatal (The native Aztec language), Spanish (From observing the Conquistadors), and English (From observing modern day tourists and eco-groups).
And here's a few random things about her since I have a feeling that someone will ask.
How do you pronounce her name?
"Shi-co-ten-co-at". It's derived from the Nahuatl words "Xicoa" (Angry/Jealous) and Coatl (Serpent).
What is the weapon she is holding?
It is a Macuahuitl. Basically a flat wooden club with obsidian blades in the side. Nastly weapon... capable of decapitating a horse. To see one in action, there was one used in the "Aztec Jaguar vs Zande Warrior" episode of the TV show Deadliest Warrior (6:50 for the Macuahuitl... NSFW because of blood): http://www.spike.com/full-episodes/.....eason-2-ep-204
The weapon on her belt is a run of the mill obsidian sacrificial dagger. She also uses other Aztec weaponry, which I'll explain in more detail when I eventually get around to doing a character sheet for her.

First off, I'd like to point out that deadliest warrior is full of BS. Hell, you can't really even pit a medieval knight against a samurai (both elite soldiers that wear heavy armor and fought on horseback and on foot). Here's an article that goes in-depth on WHY you can't compare the knight to the samurai: http://www.thearma.org/essays/knightvs.htm
That said, to say that you can somehow take two different warriors from two COMPLETELY different eras and environments, pit them against each other, and declare one the "winner" is just an outright lie.
Off my rant and back on topic, this looks awesome! I REALLY love her coloring, the bright mix of colors really work well together! The shading was also wonderfully done as well! I do like these types of creatures quite a bit, and they're not all that common... Especially females!
Awesome work overall and keep up the wonderful work! :D

I was under the impression Knights and Samurai were the same thing, at least in capability and role. The two groups are so diverse that only generic comparisons are possible, but the comparisons are solid: Armored horsemen capable of fighting on foot, using polearms and blunt weaponry as their primary armament, with swords as a backup. The Samurai were, generally speaking, also expected to be good archers, while the Knight eventually picked up pistols.
As far as I'm concerned, they are simply both subsets of the larger warrior class of Armored Horsemen, which also would have included Kataphractoi and Cuiriassers. Your article only convinces me of this further. x3
And the Deadliest Warrior show is usually accurate in it's depictions of weapons, even if the fights aren't fair. Testing weapons is easy to be objective with. Comparing warriors is not.

I'd like to point out that quite often generals dismounted the knights under their command and had them act as foot-soldiers. Nothing's worse then having a gang of glory-seeking knights charge before you want them to and ruin your plans (or have to quickly adjust to account for it). In fact, I recall France LOOSING quite a few battles due to their knights charging THROUGH THEIR ARMY, trampling their own forces underhoof, eager as they were to fight.
Even general comparisons between knights and samurais is hard... Polish knights, for example, mixed eastern European tactics with western, and they often carried heavy javelins into battle, throwing them at the enemy while staying out of reach before closing into melee on horse. All the knights of different nationalities fought differently and using different weapons (swords were quite common, as the longsword was a symbol of nobility keep in mind!), so even comparing them to EACH OTHER can be interesting.
Oh, I'm having too much fun recalling all this stuff... Sorry if I hit you with a wall of text! D:

I know. Both Samurai and Knights were /very/ capable foot soldiers as well.
The two (and I am only speaking generally) were expected to live up to codes of honor, and historically speaking, it can be said both groups largely failed. The Samurai and Knights who exemplified their codes of honor are famous because they were the exceptions, not the rule.
I'm convinced that as a general rule, they can just be called Armored Horsemen and lumped in with the other regional variants of the "heavy soldier on horseback" theme. They all basically did the same thing, and the differences between them are major only when you get really specific and have to pick a specific kind of knight or specific kind of samurai. :o

Eh, I still prefer to consider knights/samurai to be considered "heavy troops" since that would cover both infantry and cavalry operations. I do think the primary difference between a knight/samurai and just a soldier in heavy armor is nobility... Or a cultural significance to their rank. But I don't know. I never really thought about that too much.
Funny that a gryphon and a UFO are having a conversation about knights, no? :P

Well oddly, horsemen and nobility have gone hand-in-hand since...well, as far back as I can think of. xD The Knight can be said to be the marriage of the Equite social class of Rome and the Persian armored horsemen of the first millennium AD.
And yes, it is funny. x3
But in some European countries and in some parts of Japan, a heavy soldier could become nobility if they caught the eye of the nobility. :3

You win many universes for this. I prefer the Incans myself, but the Aztecs are awesome too. And macuahuitl swords/clubs are awesome regardless of who uses them (I think the Polynesian version and Pacific-Coast North American native tribes used a variant of it that used sharks teeth or flint instead of obsidian).
The Maori tribe of New Zealand were the ones who used shark teeth in their clubs, though other polynesian tribes probably did it too. I did study polynesian culture in college as well (particularly the Hawaiian natives), but we didn't go into too much detail about that part of the world. :)
I recall hearing about a club weapon inlaid with shark teeth or flint (and on occasion, obsidian, which was plentiful) being used in the Pacific Northwest.
And there was a theory I liked that said the Japanese metal-studded club may be related as well, given the prevalence of this particular type of weapon in all corners of the Pacific.

LOL... your comment made me think.
I came to the conclusion that she probably won't touch the eco-friendly hippie groups. Why? Because she probably ate a Greenpeace hippie back in the 60s that made her feel "funny" for hours afterwards. I might even put that on her character sheet. >_<
