Hey everyone! Working on a story in my free time with a concept I'm really loving. Did at least 1 chapter, so I feel like I can post this. Hoping I can keep going with it! But for now, check it out!
"Max Grey is an average guy in the pokémon world who never went on a pokémon adventure. Through the use of a magical necklace, however, he'll find himself on a journey looking through the eyes of a pikachu."
The pokémon world, a land full of powerful, mysterious, and lovable creatures. They’re everywhere, from the great outdoors to many families’s homes. In all walks of life one can find a pokemon becoming an essential part of their day to day. Many people even become pokémon trainers, eager to gather companions and train to unlock their potential together! But while it is a well known and coveted lifestyle, not everyone has what it takes, or the opportunity needed.
Max Grey is such a person. Unable to go on his own pokémon journey like many of his peers when he came of age, he now lives in Sheerway City working in a pokémart. While it’s not exactly the glamorous lifestyle one might imagine as a child, Max doesn’t really see a reason to complain. He has a steady job, his own apartment, and a computer to mess around with in his free time. He doesn’t have a pokémon partner of his own, like he knows most people do, he’s plenty happy to watch the pokémon and trainers that come in while he works.
Normally Max wakes up, goes to work, comes home, and hangs out on his computer in his spare time. A routine that changes today as a sign catches his eye on his way home from work. ‘Yard Sale this way’ a crudely made sign says from its taped-on position on a lamp post, enticing viewers to an experience that could potentially end in a treasure found...maybe.
Max decides that he has nowhere he needs to be, and follows the direction of the trail of signs leading him into a nicer neighborhood. Single story suburban homes line the sides of the roads, the occasional car on the curb signifying who may have guests over. It’s easy to spot his destination as a small gaggle of humans and pokémon hang around one home in particular. Not looking much different from the other homes, the cheap folding tables covered in various bits and bobs and worn looking furniture help it stand out.
Finding a place to park close enough to be comfortable is a bit of a challenge for Max, but he manages. After ensuring he’s removed his nametag to help prevent the very mild embarrassment of showing where he works while off the clock, Max gets out of his silvery car and approaches. As he gets closer he can more easily notice the empty spots on the table where a goodie had been before. This late in the day it’s obvious that most of the interesting stuff is gone, the people here simply window shopping or talking to each other casually about their pokémon. Most of them are typically cute. A few he notices being an eevee, a teddiursa, and a vulpix. Still, he drove out of his way to get here so may as well see if there’s anything good.
‘Let's see here…some fancy silverware, a few neat cups…fancy bottles too. T-shirts, jackets, more clothes…box of cables there. A few board games too…none I’ve heard of, but they look interesting? Not that I have enough people to play in person to justify a board game, asides from the Jumanji I keep in my closet. Dang, I don’t need that furniture either, think this is a bust-wait, is that?...’
As Max prepares to accept defeat and make his way back to his car a glint of light catches his eye. Looking at the source, he finds a necklace resembling a pokéball with wings and a pink gem in the center. A necklace shockingly resembling an explorer badge from an old game series, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.
Max remembered really enjoying the series as a kid. While his family moved around too much for him to safely go on his journey, he found solace in playing the Mystery Dungeon series and having his pokémon journey through them. A small smile touches his lips as he remembers his in game partner, Charmander, and the enthralling adventures he had with him.
He didn’t even know accessories like this existed, but it looked very high quality. Nervously, Max took a look on the price sticker attached to the fine silver chain to see…5 pokédollars? That was incredibly cheap for something so niche and well made. He was no expert, but he could tell that the jewelry was the real deal. Still…he DID come here to get something interesting right? He just…didn’t expect it to actually work out.
“Aaah…interested, are you?” A deep voice says next to him. Max jumps and nearly drops the necklace as he turns to see a large bearded man with a gentle smile on his face next to him. “Ah! Sorry young man, I didn’t mean to startle you, I simply noticed you took a liking to that trinket there! Would you like to buy it?”
Max takes a moment to regain his bearings before nodding. “Well…yeah. I’d like to. Honestly I’m shocked this is still here so late in the day. This thing is beautiful, and so cheap too. No idea how no one else has snatched it up.”
The man gives a chuckle and continues to smile underneath his bushy beard. “I’m not so shocked. That there belonged to a friend of mine! Said it was special, but he didn’t need it anymore. He had made all the memories needed with it and asked me to sell it next time I had a yard sale for him. Said it would find someone who needed it. I admit it was a bit of a strange request, but he’s treated me well over the years and who am I to deny a harmless request from an old friend. Maybe he’s right and you do need it, No one else has even given it a second glance all day.”
Max tries not to let his confusion show too much on his face. “Uh…sure, I suppose. I certainly don’t mind being the one to keep it but…is it really okay to buy it for so cheap?”
“Do you want me to raise the price for you?” The burly man asks with a raised eyebrow. He gives a short bark of a laugh when Max quickly shakes his head and hands over the 5 dollars. “Well there we go then! Thank you for your patronage, and do take care of that necklace, ya hear?”
Max gives him a nod, and makes his way back to his car with the badge necklace slipped into his pocket. As he gets into his car and drives home, he can’t help but feel an odd…excitement regarding the necklace? He doesn’t know why, it’s just a cool memento, so he attributes it to new toy syndrome. This logical thinking doesn’t stop the flutter in his chest as he makes his way home however.
He doesn’t take long to park back at his complex and make his way up to his second floor apartment. There, he locks the door behind him and tosses his keys onto his dining area table. The place itself is cozy, with a decent kitchen, a connected living room and dining room, and 2 bedrooms. A master, and one for guests that he might have…though he typically uses it for general storage of stuff he doesn’t actually have a home for. Still, home is home as sparsely furnished as it is.
Max lets out a sigh of relief as he settles in, kicking off his work shoes and taking off his work polo. He’ll put it away in the laundry bin in a moment, but for now the explorer badge he pulls back out of his pocket is more interesting.
Absently peeling off the price sticker, Max gives the necklace a good look over. Just like before, he sees a silver pokéball shape with a smooth pink gem in the center, with a protrusion on top that the fine necklace chain loops through while the sides show a pair of brilliantly golden wings.
A goofy smile grows on Max’s face as he recalls the pokemon quiz. Remembering how, with bated breath, he held his finger to his DS’s touch screen and waited for the spirit of pokémon to tell him his form. Feeling a little self conscious despite being alone, Max presses his thumb against the inlaid gem of the badge and then he breathes...replaying the old memory.
In…and out.
In…and out.
Almost there…in…and out.
There! We have it! A hasty type like you would be…
A pikachu!
Max let's out one big breath, trying to ignore how self conscious he feels. He feels absolutely silly but…he’s alone so who cares? Shaking his head, he smiles and unclasps the necklace before finally putting it on. He just got it, so may as well wear it for at least a bit right? It feels warm from holding it so tight as he clasps it around his neck.
There’s a sudden flash of light, and a severe sensation of vertigo before Max falls over, suddenly swimming in cloth. It takes him a moment to get his bearings as he scrambles to leave his sudden prison. When he does escape, he takes a moment to look back at what in the world had suddenly buried him! Only when he does he finds himself confused. That’s…his clothes? His pants and undershirt…and it looks so big, the door too. In fact everything-
Max’s brain suddenly connects the dots as he takes a moment to look down. He sees a fuzzy, yellow, small body instead of his own. He tries to process this, but fails for a few moments as his breathing gets heavier. It was a joke, a silly gag, it wasn’t supposed to actually work!
Starting to panic about his sudden transformation, Max hastily tries to take off the necklace again as if to turn back. Despite his now smaller hands, he finds himself undoing the clasp with ease as the badge falls onto the floor in front of him.
Another flash and moment of vertigo later and he finds himself back in his proper body…albeit naked. Quietly, Max dresses himself and gingerly picks the shining badge off the floor before collapsing into a nearby chair. He stares at the badge more intently. It gleams back at him just as bright as before. It…it actually turned him into a pokémon. He…did he imagine it? Maybe he was tired? Hallucinated? Maybe he’s going crazy?
Thoughts and theories zoom through Max’s mind as he tries to process what happened. Eventually, he calms down enough to realize that he has to confirm it…to know he didn’t just…have an EXTREMELY vivid daydream. Max takes a deep breath and gets up. He closes his eyes and clasps the necklace back on. Another moment later and he’s buried in his own clothes again. Slowly climbing out this time, Max looks at his hands and flexes them. The cute small paws do the same.
It’s surreal, and he slowly makes his way to the guest bathroom where a mirror is. He has to see. As he walks he takes note of how natural it feels to move, despite his much shorter limbs. He drops to all fours to see how that feels, and it doesn’t feel bad at all. He can tell he’d be able to move much better this way, but he ends up making the journey to the bathroom on two legs. The way is much longer now, and everything looks so large at this new height…he’ll have to explore it later.
He finally gets to the dark guest bathroom and realizes the issue of height with just how tall the sink is to him now. Still, he knows pikachu is an agile pokemon so maybe he can jump up there? He braces himself and tenses his new legs, bouncing in place a bit to get a feeling for just how high he can jump. He tries to balance the power of his leap and finally hops upwards, overshooting it a bit despite holding back. He ends up landing inside of the sink bowl after scrambling to land safely and takes a calming breath. If he wanted to explore this body more, he HAD to figure out how to move in it for stunts like this.
Carefully extracting himself from the slippery sink, Max finds a stable space on the mostly empty counter top and looks into the mirror. A pikachu looks back at him, a gleaming explorer badge necklace around its neck. He takes a step closer to look at all the details of his new look. Yellow fur, expected being a pikachu, with bright red spots on his cheeks...to store electricity maybe? He didn’t know much aside from general knowledge on pikachu, he began to realize. His eyes seemed to be a dark blue, different from the grey eyes he was used to seeing in his reflection, and he seemed to have enough excess fur on top of his head to make a decent tuft to mimic proper hair.
He stared at his reflection intently, noticing his ears occasionally flicking and twitching. He forgot about how different they were now, noticing his hearing was a bit sharper if he focused…and likely would serve as an indicator of his mood too. He presses his paws into his fluffy cheeks and squishes his face, just to see. Kneading and squeezing at it just to make silly faces at his reflection.
He was struggling to understand how he felt it all but…he knew that taking off the necklace would turn him back to normal. This amulet opened up who knows how many different experiences to him? He began to feel excitement grow in his chest as he contemplated all the things he’d be able to see from a new view! He’d be able to talk to pokemon even! That reminded him, what did he sound like now?...Taking a deep breath, Max spoke.
“Hello there, I’m…Max.”
The pikachu frowned. He could understand himself at least, yet he knew he had also spoken in pokemon. He sounded so…high pitched? Feminine? He knew pikachu weren’t going to have deep voices but-
A glance in the mirror again gets him a glimpse of his wiggling tail. A thunderbolt shape topped with a heart shape. That explains it, though Max couldn’t help himself when he groaned. Why did it make him a girl too? ‘Whatever,’ he thinks to himself,’it won’t really matter much I suppose. Not like female and male pikachu are much different in abilities right?
Max hops down from the sink after only a bit of hesitation and stumbling before thoughtfully walking back to his clothes. Whatever the amulet was, he needed to give it time to process. For now he wanted to go back to normal and tackle this crazy new ability tomorrow. Tonight he needed to sleep on it and be prepared for tomorrow when he explored it more.
A flash of light and vertigo, and Max was back to his normal self. He idly wondered if the necklace was possibly cursed as he put his clothes back on. A magic amulet that seemingly turned you into a pokémon and back with no obvious side effects? Then again, he didn’t even know something like this existed before earlier today. Did the guy who sold it know?...
These are the thoughts that followed Max as he stored the necklace in his nightstand and went about the rest of his day like normal. Cooking dinner, relaxing with video games, before cleaning up for bed. As he cozied up under his blanket, he pulled out the necklace and gave it another long look. It gleamed cheerily back at him. Sighing, he puts it away, and that night he dreams of relaxing on a sunset-lit beach, bubbles blown by krabby floating through the air and reflecting the light of the sun alongside the ocean waves.
